MySpace is a free social networking site that allows you to exchange messages with family, friends and coworkers. The site gives you the the option of receiving alerts when your MySpace contacts write comments on your profile. This guide will show you how to set up these notifications on MySpace.
-
Introduction
- The MySpace website is set up to allow community interactions via private messages or profile comments. These comments can show up on your profile without warning, regardless of their content or your permission to post them. Fortunately, MySpace offers the options of receiving notifications when someone writes on your profile and choosing to accept or reject publishing of the comments. If you'd like to set up these notifications, this article will show you the way.
Step 1: Access Your Account Settings
- The following steps will get you to the Account Settings page:
- Log into MySpace using your User ID and Password.
- On the top right side of the page is a box that reads "My Account." Click on that box.
- The next page allows you to change your contact information. You also have the option to edit your password, privacy, spam settings and other settings. Near the left of the page is a "Spam" link. Click on that link.
Step 2: Adjust Your Communications Settings
- The "Spam" page allows you to change the level of acceptance for spam messages and other communications options. The settings you will want to change are listed under "Comments." You will have three options:
- Require approval before comments are posted.
- Require CAPTCHA from users suspected of spamming.
- Only friends can add comments to my blog.
- The first option is the most important. By clicking the box next to it, you will receive notification e-mails to the address you used to set up the account. These notifications will tell you the name of the poster and the content they are trying to write on your profile.
- The second option is requiring CAPTCHA, which is a special image that computers have difficulty reading. It will help prevent people from using spammer bots to send you messages and leave comments. This is important because you don't want your e-mail inbox to be inundated with notifications that someone is trying to write spam on your profile. If spam is a problem on your MySpace page, you will probably want to click this box.
- The third option allows you to only allow friends to add comments to your blog, but still gives you the option of having notifications sent to your e-mail account.
- When you're finished, click "Save All Changes."
Step 3: Examine Other Options
- While you're on the "Spam" page, you should check the other account settings to see if there's anything else you should change. You can allow other people to send group, event or IM invitations, or require last names or e-mail addresses from people requesting to be a MySpace friend.
Step 4: Adjust E-Mail Notification Settings
- Now that you've finished making changes to your approval notifications, it's time to look at your general e-mail notifications. You can reach the page by following these steps:
- Return to the "My Account" section from your MySpace home page.
- Next to the "Spam" link, you will see a link for "Notifications." Click on that link.
- Choose your preferences by clicking on the boxes next to the options. The default MySpace settings send e-mails after every posting, request and comment. This page will allow you to alter these settings to your liking.
Conclusion
- MySpace notifications can be overwhelming if you're a regular on the site, but they also serve the purpose of warning and notifying you of activity of your friends. The filter options on the communications settings and notifications settings are useful in controlling both the information you receive from the website and the information others can share on your profile.
