How to setup a VPN

The following provides a step by step process on how to set up a VPN connection on a Windows XP operating system. A VPN is a virtual private network.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VPN This article will guide you through finding the control panels and wizards that will allow you to create a new VPN connection.

Tips

  • The "Company Name" field do not have any restrictions or limits. Make a name that helps you easily remember the purpose of the connection.

Introduction

Setting up a VPN connection on a Windows XP operating system is very easy. It will take less than 6 minutes for a novice. Before you start, make sure that you can access the internet.

Step 1: Open Network Connections Control Panel

To open the network connections control panel, go to

Start -> Control Panel

and double click on the "Network Connections" icon. A list of existing dial-up and LAN connections will appear in the window.

Step 2: Use the wizard to create new connection

In the "Network Connections" window, go to

File -> New Connections

to open the new connection wizard.

Click Next to begin the wizard, then choose the "Connect to the network at my workplace" item from the list and then click Next.

On the next page, choose the "Virtual Private Network connection" option and click Next.

Enter a name for the new VPN connection in the "Company Name" field and then click Next.

Enter the name or IP address of the target VPN remote access server and click Next. If you are in a business, your network administrator should provide this information.

On the "Connection availability" screen, choose "Anyone's use" or "My Use Only". The default option, "My Use Only," ensures Windows will make the new connection available only to the user that is currently logged on. The "Anyone's use" option will allow anyone that is logged onto the computer to access the new connection. After you have selected an option, click Next.

Click Finish to complete the wizard.

Step 3: Checking the new [[VPN]] connection

In the "Network Connections" window, you should see your new connection item listed. Right click on the item and select the "Connect" option. A "Connection" dialog screen will prompt you for Username and password. Enter the appropriate information and click Connect. If the authentication credentials are correct, you should now be connected via your new VPN connection.
