"Retweeting" is an action that can be performed on the popular social networking site, Twitter. To retweet something means you are repeating a post (or "tweet") that someone else published to their profile. This allows you to share something said by someone you follow with your entire network of followers. Because you are reposting their words verbatim, the retweet feature properly assigns credit to the original tweeter. Retweeting is considered proper Twitter etiquette whenever you want to share another user's post, so that no one can be accused of stealing someone else's words.
When done often and correctly, retweeting can create more buzz about your Twitter feed and draw more interest. In turn, this will also likely draw in more followers who are interested to see not only what original content you are posting, but the interesting retweets that you are broadcasting.http://bloggingbits.com/the-art-and-science-of-retweeting-for-twitteraholics/
Below are a couple different ways in which you can retweet in just a matter of seconds. To get started you will need to have a valid, active Twitter account. If you don't already have one, you can sign up for free at Twitter.com. Once you are logged in, you will be poised to begin retweeting using these instructions below.
How to Retweet on Twitter Video
This Mahalo.com video explains two different ways you can "retweet" on Twitter. The first way is to click a "retweet" button that appears under another person's post. This is shown in the video for clarity. The host also breaks down how to add personal comments to the end of retweets and give the original writer proper credit.
Step 1: Two-Click Retweeting
If you find a tweet that you would like to retweet, you can do so in a matter of seconds with this two-click method:
- Allow your mouse to hover over the post you wish to retweet.
- A "reply" and "retweet" link should appear in the lower right portion of that tweet.
- Click "retweet".
- A message will pop up asking you to confirm if you would like to "Retweet to your followers?"
- Click "Yes".
And that's it. In two clicks you have successfully retweeted another person's post automatically. If you have attempted to follow these steps, but find that not "retweet" option appears next to the "reply" link on a person's post, then most likely that person has a privacy setting option enabled that prevents anyone from retweeting.
Step 2: Retweeting the Old-Fashioned Way
Before the days of the easy "retweet" buttons below posts, retweeting was done manually, and can still be done in this fashion, if you choose. All you have to do is the following:
- Copy the text of a person's tweet
- In your own tweet box, type "RT" (which is short for retweet), then a space, then "@username" of the person whom you are retweeting.
- Now paste in the text of the original tweet.
So if you wanted to retweet the example tweet given in the first line below from fictitious Twitter user, MahaloFan, then the second line is what your retweet would look like.

- RT @MahaloFan Wow, Mahalo.com is a great resource for Twitter help and information!
Step 3: Leaving a Comment on a Retweet
If you would like to add a comment to a retweet that you are posting, you can do so before you click the "Tweet" button to submit your retweet. Note that this only will work if you are retweeting using the old-fashioned manual method as described in Step 2. The retweet button does not allow any comments to be added.
To add your comment, simply type in the letters RT, the @username, then paste in the tweet. Now follow that up with your own comments, but be sure to put them in parenthesis to make it clear that these words did not come from the original user.
