Introduction
- If your washing machine is not running or is not providing the results you expect, there are some things you can do yourself to service it before calling a professional.
Step 1: Simple Solutions
- Before disassembling the dryer, see if any easier solutions can fix the problem.
- Make sure the cord is intact and plugged in at both ends and that there are no broken fuses.
- Verify that the control knob is turned to on.
- Press the reset button, if any.
- Check the temperature control of the water heater and make sure it's not under 120 degrees fahrenheit.
Step 2: Clean Your Washer
- If the washer does not adequately clean your clothes, it might itself need a cleaning.
- A washer can be cleaned with water softener or vinegar - add about one cup and run a cycle.
- The inside of the washer can also be hand cleaned with ammonia and detergent. Run a cycle after the cleaning.
Step 3: Disassemble the Washer
- If the above steps do not fix your problem, it's time to disassemble the dryer. Disconnect the power and the water hoses first. Follow the safety precautions in the instruction manual.
- Remove the control panel, service panel and the top of the washer.
- The control and service panel can usually be removed by unscrewing its screws.
- The top is usually removed by putting a knife between the top and side panels.
Step 4: Repair the Washer
- There are several things that could cause problems with the washer.
- If the washer is not filling up with water correctly, you might need a new water pump. They can be bought in hardware stores.
- Clean the area around the lid. Dirt buildup could prevent it from closing properly.
- Make sure the screws are tightened around the lid switch.
- The tub in the washer can be sandpapered if it causes scratches to the laundry.
- There are several others problems that could be wrong with the washer but that are best fixed by a professional. This include problems with the motor and timer of the washer.
