Some tools you will need include: Wrenches, a Power Saw (for cutting metal), Hammer, Sledge Hammer, Ladder, and a Shovel.

Start out by taking it apart piece by piece. Use a wrench and remove the rim and net. Next go to the backboard and remove it using the wrench. It may be difficult it the bolts are rusted, which is common on old basketball hoops. Have a partner spot you as you take these pieces off. Once you have taken off all the pieces, you are left with the pole. If you can, try taking off as much of the pole as you can using the wrench.

The next step is to use the power saw to cut through the metal. You can do this in sections or start right at the bottom. Again have someone spot the pole while you cut with the power saw. Note, there may be concrete in the middle of the pole as you get down to the bottom. Be careful with the saw blade because it will become very hot while cutting the metal. If it is still connected by concrete at the bottom, use the sledge hammer to knock it over.

Now that the pole is cut off, you have 2 options. You can leave the cement in the ground, or you can break it up and dig it out. If you leave it, just make sure it is smooth so no one gets hurt on it. You can use the hammer to hit it down if pieces are sticking up. If you want the cement out, you will have to break it up using the sledge hammer. You can remove the broken pieces by hand or with a shovel. Once the pieces are out, you will want to fill the whole back up with dirt and plant grass seed over it.

Now that you have the hoop down, you can leave it for the garbage or recycling to pick up, or you can take it to a place that accepts metal and scraps.

If you know someone who works in carpentry or is good with tools, you can start by asking them. If not, you can call or look online for local carpentry or construction services. One good way to find someone for this job is to post a classified ad on Craigslist. There is a "Gigs" section that has a place to post requests for Manual Labor jobs. It is free to post an ad there. In your ad, explain what you need to have done and ask for price quotes. Expect to pay between $50 and $300 depending on how much you need to have done and how long it takes.
