Want to do your part to save the environment, and recycle your old, beat-up computer? It is not quite as easy as simply dropping it into the recycle bin. Read on to learn how to recycle your computer the right way.
Introduction
Tips
Consider purchasing a used computer next time you buy, to contribute to the recycling process even more
Step 1:
Erase Your Hard Drive
Before you let your computer loose into the world, get rid of all personal information. You don't want it getting into the wrong hands, as computers are often used by identity thieves to retrieve account numbers and other info. Reset your hard drive, and get some erasing software to be extra sure.
Step 2:
Return to Manufacturer
The manufacturer of your computer may have its own recycling program. Contact them via phone or email, and find out if they will accept your old machine, and how the process works. They may charge a fee, and expect you to pay shipping costs.
Step 3:
Donate
Another way to recycle your computer is to donate it to a charitable cause. The following organizations accept old hardware and monitors:
- The East West Foundation
- Back Thru The Future Micro Computers Inc
- National Cristina Foundation
- Voice of the Children http://www.ehow.com/how_9173_recycle-used-computers.html
