Plastic surgeon Dr. Adrian Richards explains what to expect after you've had Botox injections. Richards recommends that patients not participate in any strenuous exercise in the 3-4 hours immediately following treatment. He also says it's a good idea to try and use your facial muscles a bit more than usual (raising eyebrows, smiling, etc.) every 10 minutes after your injections. Expect some slight discomfort and swelling, and possibly bruising, in the days after the Botox is injected.

Introduction
- Have you recently considered undergoing Botox injections? Unlike many cosmetic procedures, recovering from Botox is rather easy. The procedure itself does not require much preparation, and most people are able to drive themselves home after the injections. However, like any such procedure there are some things you may do to help speed your recovery along. This guide will help direct you on how to recover from Botox.
Step 1: What to Avoid
- Once you have received a Botox procedure you should be well enough to drive yourself home. Once there, however, there are several things you should avoid if you want the procedure to have optimal affects. This includes, but is not limited to:
- Avoid massaging the areas where the Botox was injected. By doing this, you risk spreading the toxin to unintended areas.
- Avoid lying down for several hours following the procedure. This may also cause the toxin to spread.
- Do not participate in any strenuous exercise for at least 24 hours following injections. This, too, may cause the Botox to travel to muscles not intended to be paralyzed.
- Ask your doctor about any products you should avoid during your recovery
Step 2: Other Tips
- After a botox procedure there are a few things that will help ensure your recovery will be a success. You should:
- Apply an ice pack or other related cool compress to the various injection areas. This is intended to reduce swelling. Leave the ice packs on for at least 10 minutes.
- Perform facial exercises to test your muscles
- If necessary, apply approved cosmetics to the injection areas in order to conceal the procedure
