How To Record a Show From a DVR To A Computer

There are many people across the country who wait patiently every week for new episodes of their favorite television shows. They come back week after week to see just what will happen next. Some people have even chosen to record these shows using a Digital Video Recorder or DVR to ensure that they don't miss a minute of the action. The DVR has become a permanent fixture in most homes throughout the world. These devices are easy to use, they do not require the use and storage of cumbersome cassette tapes and they have a large storage capacity.

Still there are some who do not have the time to sit down at home and watch the television shows that they have recorded. For these busy people there is a simple solution to the problem. Many DVR's have the capability to transfer the shows and movies stored to a computer or laptop, allowing consumers to watch their favorite shows anywhere they go. Recording a television show from a DVR to a computer is quick and easy to do. This means no matter where you go you can now take all your favorite shows with you. Below are the steps to record a show from a DVR to a computer or laptop.

Step 1: Assemble Your Tools

For the first step there are several things that you will need. In addition to the DVR, you will need a DVR as well as an S-Video cable. The cable that you will need can be purchased at any store that sells electronics and electronic adapters. The S-Video cable looks like a normal adapter. The only difference is that one end will split and have two ends. One end will be red and the other end will be white. Do not connect this cable at this time, that will be done later in the process.

Once you have the necessary items to complete this process, record your shows onto the DVR just like you would if you were going to watch them on the television. Once your show has been recorded you can begin the process of recording the show to your computer. The next step you will take is to turn on your DVR, television and your DVD player. All of these devices will necessary to complete the recording. Ensure that they are connected and working properly before moving to the next step. If they are not working properly, diagnose and correct any problems before moving on to the next step.

Step 2: Connect The Hardware

Look at the back of the DVD player. You will need to change the inputs on the player to record your show from the DVR to your computer. Normally you would have a bale that contains a red, white and yellow end. You would then plug this cable into the corresponding spots on the back of the DVD plaer. An S-Video cable, however, has only two ends that are red and white. With the use of a S-Video cable you will need to plug the cable into the L1 spot on the back of the DVD player instead of the output spots on the back of the player. Once you have changed the configuration on the back of the player, you will change the television to match. The television will need to be changed to the input “Video 2” to match the configuration on the back of the DVD player.

Once this is done, you need to make sure that everything is connected properly. Select the show that has been recorded to the DVR and select play. If everything is properly connected the show will be playing on the television screen. If it is not, go back to the DVD player and make sure that you have the proper configuration.

Step 3: Record

The next step, once you have ensured everything is connected properly, is to locate a DVD R/RW CD. With the player turned on, place the blank DVD into the DVD player. When recording a show from the DVR to a blank DVD you will need to set an amount of time for the recording. When setting the time, the more time you allot the lower quality of video you will have. If you have recorded a movie that you would like to keep, this may be a major factor in the amount of time you set. For example, if you are recording an event that you will only watch one time then erase you can allot more time for recording because quality will not be of the utmost importance.

When it comes to time, two hours is the recommended amount of time needed to ensure the best quality of video. Once the time has been set, press play button on the DVR. Immediately after you have done this, press the record button on your DVD player. This will begin the recording on the DVD player. You can now place the DVD into your computer's disk drive and watch from your computer or laptop.
