Step 1: What Is Poison Ivy?
- Poison Ivy, also called toxicodendron radicans, is a vine that is found in wooded areas of North America and produces Urushiol, a toxin that causes skin irritation in most people. Poison Ivy can be transferred if:
- You directly touch or come in contact with the plant or its leaves
- If your clothing comes in contact with the plant and you touch your clothing
- If your cat or dog comes in contact with the plant and you touch their fur
- For those that are allergic to poison ivy, an irritating rash will form.
Step 2: Identifying the Poison Ivy Plant
- Poison ivy tends to grow in wooded areas, and is therefore prevalent in areas where people camp and hike. For this reason, it is a good idea to learn how to recognize the poison ivy plant so that you may avoid it entirely.
How Does it Grow?
- Poison ivy grows in three main ways:
- On vines. Poison ivy will often grow up the side of trees in the form of thick vines.
- Low to the ground. This is one of the most common types. This poison ivy grows in thick clusters that can reach up to your knees.
- As shrubs.
What Does it Look Like?
- Poison ivy is usually distinguished by its leaves. You know you are looking at the poison ivy plant if:
- There are three leaves, forming what is known as a trifoliate pattern. There is one leaflet at the end of a poison ivy stalk and two leaflets below the first and directly across from each other.
- Poison ivy leaves are normally green, but turn red during the fall
- There are white, fruit type berry clusters on the vines
Step 3: Identifying the Poison Ivy Rash
- The main symptom of a poison ivy rash is itching. Most rashes start as a small red mark and gradually grow bigger and more irritated. The rash becomes raised slightly on the skin, and may produce bullies, which are similar to blisters. If you notice a rash forming, and have been in the woods recently, then chances are you have contracted poison ivy.
