Decorating a Christmas tree begins with placing the lights on the tree. This guide to how to put lights on a Christmas tree will make sure your Christmas tree decorating gets off to a great start.
In order to properly put Christmas lights on your tree, you'll need to calculate how many lights you need, test the lights, and then wrap them around the tree. The process isn't particularly difficult, but there are a few things you need to consider - be sure you know the size of your tree so you can estimate how many strings of lights you will need. Once you get the amount, then you must check the lights before you string them, otherwise you are in for some potentially major frustrations dealing with "dead" lights once they are on the tree itself.
Most of all though, have fun - decorating a Christmas tree is a big holiday tradition in many families, and all your hard work will pay off when you plug the lights in and enjoy the twinkling, colorful Christmas tree.
How to Light a Christmas Tree
Decorating a Christmas tree can be as simple or as extravagant as you want it to be. Keltie will show you how to put lights on your tree and decorate with round ornaments.
Step 1: Determine How Many Lights You Need for Your Tree
Plan on 100-150 lights per vertical foot of tree. You tastes may vary - some people prefer more lights, others prefer a less twinkly look. Lights are generally sold in strands of 100-150 lights, so you can plan on one strand per foot. if you use larger ice lights, or specialty bubble lights, you'll probably use fewer lights.
Step 2: Test the Lights Before You Hang Them on the Tree
It's much easier to test your lights before they go on the tree. Untangle each strand of lights and plug it separately into an outlet. Remove any dead bulbs, and replace them with the spares that came with the lights. If you didn't keep the spares, you may be able to find replacement bulbs at the hardware store.
After you're sure all the lights are working, plug the strands together into one continuous strand of lights, and coil them up neatly.
Step 3: Put the Lights on The Christmas Tree:
Working with the coil you made of the lights in step 2, hook the loose end around the very top of the tree. Starting at the top, unwind the lights around the tree. Make sure to weave them in and out of the branches. Turn the lights on when you're done, and make any necessary positional adjustments before you begin placing ornaments on the tree.
