The iPad is the ideal company for Digital Media Playback, e-book reading and web browsing. And even though it doesn’t contain a webcam, (unless the rumors of an added webcam when the iPad will be distrubted are true), it allows for easy photo viewing, once the pictures are loaded onto the iPad.
However, if you have found that webpage with the information you need to remember, the address you need to go to, or have selected the perfect photo, you now need to print it out. The iPad doesn’t support printing devices out of the box, but there are several alternatives that will allow you to get that important information on paper, or get those photos printed out. This guide will give you the alternatives on how to print from an ipad.
Option 1: Printer-specific Apps
Many Printer manufacturers have released Apps for the Apple App Store, which enable you to access your printer.
- Canon has released its ‘’Canon Easy-PhotoPrint App’’, which allows easy wireless photo printing from your Apple device (including the iPhone and iPod touch) to a compatible Canon PIXMA printer.
- Helwett Packet have released an app called ‘’HP iPrint Photo 2.0’’, also available though the Apple Apps Store. Functionality of the HP iPrint Photo 2.0 is similar to Canon’s app, it allows printing of photos and images to capable printers of HP.
- Epson’s App is called "Epson iPrint", and is also available in Apple's App Store. All Wi-Fi capable all-in-one printers launched in 2010 will be supported , according to Epson. http://www.ciol.com/News/News-Reports/Epson-supports-printing-apps-for-iPhone/22110130434/0/
The above Apps work very well for images and photos, but are not capable of printing web pages, addresses, or other non-image pages. However, this drawback is easily helped: Simply create a screenshot, and print the screenshot as if it’s a photo.
Here’s how:
- Hold the top power button (the Sleep/off button on top of the iPad) together with the Home button (the one with the square on the front of the ipad) simultaneously. This will create a screenshot, located in the Photos directory.
- Start the App of your specific printer type.
- When browsing the photos on your iPad, select the screenshot you just created
- Send the screenshot to your printer, exactly like you would do in case of printing a photo.
Option 2: Printer Magic
If your printer manufacturer doesn’t have a specific iPad App for printing, you might try Printer Magic. This App, created by Wellala, allows printing of content to any printer supporting Internet Printing Protocol (IPP), or capable of being shared from a Mac via Printer Sharing.
The App will cost you $7, but allows printing of stored pictures, simple picture editing like pinching, zooming or cropping images before printing. The App can be obtained from the Apple App Store, and will integrate with other apps. http://www.ipodnn.com/articles/09/10/15/magic.printer.prints.pages.from.an.iphone
Option 3: Print & Share
EuroSmartz has released a series of Apps to support printing from Apple mobile devices. The range of apps consist of ‘Print & Share’, ‘Print’, ‘DocPrinter’, ‘NotePrinter’ and ‘AltaMail’.
The Apps are a combination of a small App on your iPad/iPhone, and a program called WePrint, which installs on your home computer. The iPad App connects to WePrint, and thus allows direct printing from your device. All Apps are all available through the Apple App Store. http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewArtist?id=299105918 http://www.eurosmartz.com/
Option 4: Moving screenshots to a computer
If these earlier options fail, you have to resort to making screenshots of the data you want to print, and send them to your computer. From there, you can handle and print the screenshots just like any other picture.
- Just like in Option 1, make a screenshot using the Sleep/Off button on top of your iPad, together with the ‘Home’ button. This creates the screenshot in the Photo directory on your iPad.
- Connect your iPad to your computer using the standard USB cable provided with your ipad. Your iPad will now be recognized, and will show in iTunes
- You can either browse your photos using iTunes, or use your computer explorer. If you want to use your explorer, you will notice the iPad listed as a separate drive. Open it, and your photos, including your screenshots are readily available. If you can’t find them at first, try /private/var/root/Media/DCIM/100APPLE. http://www.everythingicafe.com/forum/general-discussion/where-does-iphone-photos-store-on-hard-drive-18163.html
- Copy your screenshots to the computer, and open them up in a picture viewer. This allows you to easily print the screenshot.
Option 5: Online printing
If you don’t have a printer of your own, or want your photos to be printed in the best quality possible, you can also send your photos to an online printing service.
‘’Photo2lab’’ and "Photo2home " are products by Ecce-Terram (based in New Zealand), allowing users to send photos directly to their office, and have the photos printed professionally. They print Photos, postcards, texts and photobooks. http://www.ecce-terram.co.nz/index.php?id=319
