Everyone loves a good, home-cooked Thanksgiving dinner, with favorites like turkey, dressing, cranberries, and pumpkin pie. Though we all want to provide a good meal for our guests, we don’t want to go broke buying the ingredients. Fortunately, you're about to learn how to prepare Thanksgiving dinner on a budget.
Turkey Dinner on a Budget
Cynthia Fauser from the University of Missouri Extension, explains how to host Thanksgiving dinner on a budget. An extravagant dinner can cost as much as $100-$150. Your Thanksgiving dinner can be much less expensive. By planning ahead, shopping sales, using coupons, and asking your guests to bring dishes, you can save money on your Thanksgiving dinner.
Introduction
Thanksgiving is a time to celebrate and enjoy time with family and friends. It's also the perfect occasion to splurge on your favorite foods and demonstrate your culinary skill. Are you worried about blowing your budget on food for your holiday meal? By asking your guests to help, using coupons and sales, and stocking up, you can save money on Thanksgiving. To accomplish this, you'll need to do some research, be organized, and be a little creative.
Ask Your Guests to Help
Just because you’re hosting dinner, that doesn’t mean you necessarily have to provide all of the food. It will be most convenient for you to prepare the turkey and dressing, but let your guests take care of the rest. Ask each person (or couple) to bring a dish to share. To avoid a meal of 7 green bean casseroles, assign an equal number of vegetables, [[salads], and desserts. Even people who don’t cook or bake can bring beverages, rolls, or pre-made desserts.
Use Coupons and Sales
In the weeks before Thanksgiving, check your Sunday newspaper’s coupon section. Here you’ll probably find coupons for items used in many popular Thanksgiving dishes, including spices, canned and frozen vegetables, packaged stuffings, dessert mixes, and staples such as eggs and butter. Most grocery stores also put common Thanksgiving ingredients on sale right before the holiday. When you use coupons on sale items, you can get huge savings on groceries.
Stock-up
If you know that you’ll be hosting a Thanksgiving dinner this year, stock up early on non-perishable ingredients. In late summer and early autumn, scan store circulars for sale prices on the ingredients you’ll need to make you favorite Thanksgiving dishes. By making some extra room in your pantry and freezer, you’ll be able to store vegetables, mixes, baking staples, and even a frozen turkey. Taking advantage of low prices ahead of time can keep you from over-spending at the last minute.
