Treating yourself to a spa or at-home manicure is an excellent way to pamper yourself and get your hands and nails into picture-perfect condition. This guide will show you how to prepare for a manicure.

Introduction
- Regardless of whether you're a regular spa visitor, are getting your first manicure, or are planning to give yourself a home manicure, there are a few things you should do before heading to the nail salon or polishing your own nails. The steps you will take will be different for home manicures than if you're getting a professional manicure, but both are described below.
Before a Salon Manicure
- Since you are paying a professional nail technician to do your nails, there isn't much you need to do to prepare your hands before going to the salon. If you have any deep cuts, rashes, sprains, or other injuries to your hands or wrists, consider postponing your manicure until after these issues have healed themselves. Otherwise, do the following before attending your nail appointment:
- Remove any nail polish from your fingernails
- Wash your hands thoroughly and completely
- If your hands are excessively dirty, dry, or in otherwise poor condition, soak them in warm water for about ten minutes, and then use a nail file to remove any dirt remaining under your nails
- Remove any and all rings
Preparation for a Home Manicure
- If you can't afford it or simply don't like the idea of spending a lot of money on a professional manicure, you can give your hands and nails the same pampering treatment at home.
What You'll Need
- Nail polish remover
- Cotton balls
- Two tablespoons of coconut, almond or olive oil
- One tablespoon of sugar
- A large bowl
- An orange stick
- Moisturizer
- A towel
What to Do
- To prepare your hands for your home manicure, follow these steps:
- Remove any old nail polish from your nails
- Wash your hands thoroughly and completely
- Create a homemade moisturizing scrub for your hands by mixing a tablespoon of coconut oil, almond oil or olive oil with two tablespoons of sugar. Apply this mixture to your hands and then use it to scrub and exfoliate your hands and nails
- Soak your hands for about ten minutes in a bowl of warm water. If you like, you can add a few drops of essential oil to the water to create an aromatherapeutic soak
- After soaking you hands, dry them thoroughly
- Use an orange stick to remove any dirt or dry skin from beneath your nails and push back your cuticles
- Apply moisturizer to your hands, being sure to massage some into your nails and cuticles
- Dampen your towel and then place it in the microwave for 20-30 seconds to warm it up
- Wrap your hands in the warm towel and relax for two to five minutes
- You are now ready to file, buff and polish your nails. For more detailed instructions on giving yourself a manicure, see Mahalo's guide to How to Do a Manicure at Home.
