Polishing your vehicle is not the same as waxing, as some may believe. While waxing involves the application of a later of protection on top of the paint, polish needs to be worked into the surface of the vehicle and break down the abrasives on it to work effectively.
Wash Your Car
Before you can start polishing, your car needs to be completely clean. You can wash it in your driveway with a bucket of water, soap, and a soft sponge and towel.
Avoid going to a drive-thru car wash. These are normally fine, but they often miss spots that you will find if you wash it yourself.
Polishing by Hand
Polishing by Machine
If you want results akin to a new car finish, you should use one of two types of polishing machine: an orbital polisher or a rotary polisher.
Orbital polishers are most popular with enthusiast detailers as they are easy to use and produce top-notch results that do not damage the paint (if used correctly). Orbitals oscillate in an eccentric circular motion, similar to the motion you would use polishing by hand, but faster.
Rotary polishers are direct drive, meaning the polishing pad is driven directly off the motor, creating higher speeds and more heat. This type of polisher is used by professional detailers more than enthusiasts. Since a rotary polisher at the wrong speed, with the wrong polish or pad can do more harm than good, polishing with a machine at home should be done with an orbital machine.
1. Using a 1x1 section, apply the polish the same as you would by hand.
2. Using little pressure and a speed of 4.5-5, work the polish into the surface of the vehicle.
3. When you determine that you are achieving the results you want, continue moving outward in 1x1 or 2x2 sections until the entire surface has been polished to your liking.
NOTE: working time will vary depending on temperature, humidity, speed of movement, pressure, the type of pad and polish.
Step 3: Maintenance
To keep your car looking great, wash and polish it regularly. If you keep it well-maintained, the vehicle will be less likely to develop rust and corrosion. Proper care will help your car look like new for years.
