Introduction
The saxophone is among the most popular wind instruments, and has a very distinctive tone. There are two most common types: alto and tenor sax. Alto sax is usually best for beginners, due to its smaller size. Once you master the saxophone, you can play in a marching band, a jazz band, or even solo. -
Step 1: Get a Saxophone
Before you can start learning to play, you should get your own instrument. There are several ways to do this:- Rent
- Get a loaner from your school
- Buy a new saxophone
- Buy a used saxophone
It is wise not to spend a lot of money at first, as you may discover that the instrument is not for you once you start playing.

Step 2: Learn the Basics
To start playing:- Assemble the instrument, and insert reed
- Position your lower lip between your bottom teeth and the reed
- Keep a firm grip with the lips, but do not squeeze
- Blow through the reed
- Practice until you are able to blow a long, smooth, continuous note
Step 3: Take Lessons
It is best to take lessons to ensure that you get the most out of your playing. A teacher will be able to show you proper technique, and help you learn to read sheet music and play tunes. To find a good teacher, ask your local music store for suggestions. If you are a student, contact your band instructor to ask for a recommendation. You can also look online, but if you go this route be sure to ask for references. You don't want to waste money on poor instruction.Step 4: Practice
To become proficient at your instrument, you will need to dedicate a significant amount of time to practicing. Set aside an hour at least every other day to perfect your skill. If you have friends who are also learning to play, it is a good idea to practice together so that you can offer each other feedback and support.
