Lesson 8: How to Play on the Guitar Frets

Now that you know what frets are, let's learn how to properly use them. Thomas will guide you through exactly where you put your fingers in relation to each fret in order to play all of the notes you want to.

How to Play on the Guitar Frets

Step 1: The key to playing on the fretboard is to first make sure that your left forearm (or right forearm if you play a left handed guitar) is coming at the neck at a right angle. Make sure your hand curls around the neck comfortably so that each finger also hits the fretboard at a right angle.

Step 2: When your fingers are on the fretboard, make sure that they land in between the metal frets. Do not play exactly on the fret, and do not play to close to the fret behind the one you're trying to play. This will cause the sound of the string to muffle or buzz.

Step 3: Push down on the string firmly, but not too hard or too light. Pushing down too lightly will result in a nasty buzzing sound, and pushing down too hard will increase the pitch of the note causing it to go out of tune.
