How to Play HOSE Poker

Also known as SHOE poker, HOSE poker is a unique game that features four separate poker variations played during the same game. It's similar to HORSE as it includes Texas hold'em, Omaha hi-low, seven-card stud and seven-card stud eight or better. To find out more about this distinct card game, read to to learn how to play HOSE poker.

Just like the gameplay for HORSE, HOSE features a different game during each round or timed portion of the game. It's often seen in online poker rooms and casinos. It's not the most popular game, but can include some of the top players as it requires skills in each of the four games.

Deriving it's name from the names of the games it contains, HOSE is started with a round of Texas Hold'em, then a round of Omaha, which is played in a hi-lo variation. Standard Seven-card draw follows as does a round of Seven-Card Stud Eights or better.http://www.horsepoker.net/hose-poker.php

While individual rules are varied based on where the game is hosted, HOSE is generally played with a fixed limit for betting, similar to HORSE. Stakes are generally also set by the casino or online poker room, including if the stakes will increase throughout the game. Many times a set time amount is decided upon at the beginning of the game, with the game changing and stakes increasing at each interval.http://www.horsepoker.net/hose-poker.php

To become a pro at playing HOSE poker, you'll need to learn and master the individual games, including Texas hold'em, Omaha hi-lo, seven-card stud and seven-card stud hi-lo.

Step 1: Play Texas Hold'em

  1. The person seated to the immediate left of the dealer places the small blind. The person to their left places the large blind.
  2. The dealer gives each player two face-down cards.
  3. Starting with the person one seat clockwise from the person who posted the large blind, a round of betting occurs with each player allowed to call the large blind, raise the bet or fold their cards.
  4. The dealer burns one card, placing it face down on the table and out of play, then deals three face-up community cards in the center.
  5. A second round of betting follows, starting with the person to the left of the dealer.
  6. Another card is burned and the turn, or a fourth card face up on the table, is dealt.
  7. More betting follows with players permitted to check, call, raise or fold.
  8. The river, a fifth community card, is dealt to the center of the table, once again burning a card first.
  9. The final round of betting follows, again with players checking, betting, calling a bet, raising or folding.
  10. Should more than one player remain at this point in the hand, each player flips their two hole cards face up to show their best five-card hand. Each player can use any combination of their two cards plus the five community cards with the highest-ranking hand winning the pot. Hands are ranked as follows:http://www.texasholdem-poker.com/beginnersintro

Two Pair Two cards of one rank, two cards of a second same rank, one unrelated card
One pair Two cards of matching rank, three unrelated cards
High Card The hand with the highest card and none of the above combinations

Step 2: Play Omaha Hi-Lo

  1. The dealer, or dealer button, is moved one seat clockwise.
  2. The player to the left of the new dealer posts the small blind. The player seated in the next spot clockwise posts the large blind.
  3. Each player is dealt four cards, all face down.
  4. Starting with the third person left of the dealer, each player is permitted to call the large blind, raise the amount or fold their cards.
  5. The dealer burns a card, then deals three face-up into the center, known as the flop.
  6. Players participate in a second round of betting, starting with the player to the immediate left of the dealer.
  7. The turn, a fourth community card, is dealt, once again after a card is burned.
  8. One more round of betting follows, again starting to the left of the dealer with players checking, betting, calling, raising or folding.
  9. A final community card, the river, is dealt into the center of the table.
  10. Player bet for a final time, while determining their best five-card hand using a combination of two of their face-down cards and three of the face-up community cards.
  11. Should more than one player reach the end of the hand, all hands in play are flipped up and the person with the highest-ranking hand, using a standard scale of hand rankings as listed above in Texas hold'em, wins half of the pot. The second half of the pot is awarded to the player showing the lowest-ranking poker hand.http://www.pokerstars.com/poker/games/omaha/high-low/

Step 3: Play Seven-Card Stud

  1. Each player bets an ante, an amount much less than the minimum bet amount, to start the pot.
  2. The dealer gives each player three cards, the first two face down and the third face up.
  3. Starting with the player with the lowest face-up card, a round of betting occurs. That first person must bet, while other players can call the bet, raise the amount or fold their cards.
  4. The dealer gives each player a fourth card, which is dealt face-up on their stack.
  5. Starting with the person with the lowest two face-up cards, a second round of betting occurs, following a clockwise manner around the table.
  6. Fifth street, or a fifth face-up card, is dealt to each player.
  7. using the same logic as before, betting starts with the the person holding the lowest face-up hand and going around the table.
  8. A sixth card is dealt to each player, the last face-up card of the hand.
  9. Again players bet after the new card, starting with the person holding the lowest combination of face-up cards.
  10. One final card, dealt face down, is given to each player.
  11. A final round of betting follows as players use five of their seven total cards to create the highest-ranking hand. Whichever player shows the highest hand wins the pot, using the standard scale of hand rankings as listed above.http://www.pokerstars.com/poker/games/stud/

Step 4: Play Seven-Card Stud Hi-Lo

Using the same steps as in seven-card stud, each player places the ante and receives a total of seven cards. Similarly the cards are dealt with the first two down, then four face up and the final card down. Betting separates each round of dealings after the initial three cards.

The difference from seven-card stud is players attempt to make the best five-card hand either ranking high or low. The eight or better refers to the maximum card a player can hold when attempting the low hand, that being an eight. The pot is split between the high and low hands. Should a low hand fail to qualify, containing over an eight, the entire pot will be awarded to the high hand.http://www.pokerstars.com/poker/games/stud/high-low/
