About Foo Fighers
The Foo Fighters formed shortly after Kurt Cobain's death in 1994, when Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl started this new band and moved on to record the album This Is A Call (which was released in 1995). For this album, Grohl played all of the instruments himself. However, he soon recruited Nate Mendel, William Goldsmith and Pat Smear to play bass, drums and guitar, respectively. Grohl himself ended up singing and playing guitar in Foo Fighters, abandoning his previous role in Nirvana as a drummer.
Early in the band's career, they took a lot of heat for sounding too much like Nirvana. However, Foo Fighters proved that they could hold their own in the music scene, and despite numerous changes in band members they have remained one of the more popular rock groups today.c
Proper Guitar Technique
Before learning songs, it is vital that you master proper technique when playing guitar. This will allow you to learn good habits, and result in a better sound as well as greater ease in playing. The following tips will help you use good technique:
- Take a seat in an armless chair, sitting with your back straight.
- Hold the guitar so that the neck is parallel to the floor and the instrument is sitting on one of your knees.
- Place one hand so that the thumb is behind the neck, and the fingers are loosely covering (but not touching) the strings.
- With your other hand, make a fist (loosely) and then hold your guitar pick so that it is in between your thumb and the outer knuckle of your forefinger.c
Play "Everlong"
Willie Chambers from the band Windsor will show you how to play the song in the video above. First, tune your guitar to a drop D. The song starts with a root D, and then you can see the fingering patterns in the video to learn the chords and transitions needed.
