Introduction
A djembe is an African drum that is played with the hands. While it may not seem complicated, it can actually take plenty of practice to get the correct sound out of the instrument. There are only a few techniques involved, but precision and correct form are both necessary to master the djembe. -
Step 1: Find an Instrument
Take a trip to the local music store to try out some djembes. You may want to call ahead, as they are on the exotic side, and smaller stores may not carry them.Once you find a selection, test a few out. Note how they feel to your hands, and how comfortable they are to carry around. Avoid getting a djembe that is too heavy for you, as you may need to carry it around. Also, choose one with a tone that appeals to you.

Step 2: Get Set Up
To play your djembe:- Sit down
- Pull yourself to the edge of your seat
- Cross your ankles
- Place the drum between your thighs
- Set the bottom of the djembe behind your heels
Step 3: Play
There are three basic sounds you can create on the djembe. Bass is the deepest, tone is in the middle and slap is the highest sound. Here's how they work:- Bass: Using a stiff wrist, strike the middle of the drum with your hand.
- Tone: Keeping your elbow through your fingertips in a straight line, strike the djembe near the outside rim. Snap your hand back immediately after contact.
- Slap: Keep your elbow stiff, but relax your hand and curve your fingers. Strike the drum with your fingertips only, and snap back quickly.
