How to Play Ding Dong Merrily on High on Piano

New pianists who are looking to gain experience in playing holiday songs should consider adding the carol "Ding Dong Merrily On High" to their repertoire.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UQc_cRtgrMo&feature=player_embedded   This song is ideal for anyone who is practicing to play the piano two-handed, as there are only two chords to learn and the festive melody would be sure to impress any friends and family who gather around during the holiday season.

"Ding Dong Merrily On High" is a traditional English folk song that is often sung during Christmas in the form of a carol.  It first appeared in the "Orchesographie", a book of dance written by Johan Tabourot (1519-93).http://www.hymnsandcarolsofchristmas.com/Hymns_and_Carols/ding_dong_merrily_on_high.htm Originally titled "Branle l'Officiel", the song was usually performed by lackeys and servants, although sometimes men and women of greater importance would assume the roles.http://www.flutetunes.com/tunes.php?id=286 The title literally translates as 'The Official Branle' or 'The Officers Brawl.'http://www.hymnsandcarolsofchristmas.com/Hymns_and_Carols/ding_dong_merrily_on_high.htm

Step 1: Start With The Chords

Begin in C position, with the fingers of your left hand over the C, D, E, F and G keys.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UQc_cRtgrMo&feature=player_embedded   First, play the C Chord, by pressing the C, E and G keys simultaneously.   When you feel comfortable, switch to the F chord, which is played by pressed the C, F and A keys.  These are the only two chords you will need to play this song, so practice switching between them until you feel you are ready.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UQc_cRtgrMo&feature=player_embedded

Step 2: Learn The Melody

Starting with the C key, learn the timing of the melody, allowing your fingers to cross over your thumb when the lower notes are played.  Using this method, you will be able to play more than five keys without losing the stability of your hand.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UQc_cRtgrMo

Step 3: Putting Them Together

Combine the chords and the melody together to complete the song.  This is the hardest part of the process and requires practice, timing and concentration, but once your fingers recognize the pattern, it will begin to feel more natural.  Keep going if you make a mistake or miss a note.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UQc_cRtgrMo&feature=player_embedded  Bear in mind that the latter part of this song is a melody solo and doesn't require the chords to be played.
