Introduction
If you want to join a band, perform as a soloist, or just learn a new skill, you may be interested in learning to play the clarinet. This instrument has a light, airy tone that is similar to a flute. It is a good instrument for beginners, as it is lightweight and doesn't require as much breathing power as other wind instruments such as the trumpet or tuba. -
Step 1: Find an Instrument
First, get an instrument of your own so that you can play around and practice your technique. You can rent a clarinet, or you can buy a new or used one. It may be a good idea to head to a local music store to check out the selection, or you can go online if you prefer. Whichever you choose, do some shopping around before you buy. If you are a student, find out if your school has loaners available for you to use. -
Step 2: Learn Proper Technique
You will need to work on your technique before you can begin playing seriously:- Assemble your clarinet
- Position your left hand on top half of the clarinet
- Position your right hand on the bottom half
- Place your lips on the mouthpiece
- Blow in a steady stream
Step 3: Get Lessons
You will need an instructor to ensure that you are using the correct technique, and to help you get the best sound out of your clarinet. Enroll in group classes, or get private lessons if you don't mind spending the extra money. Ask a local music store for references. If you are in school, your band instructor should also be able to provide references.
