Featured Video: Bingo Basics
This quite entertaining retro video will help you understand the basics of the game a bit better, considering it was, at its time a legit bingo game to play along with. It could also help you better understand the overall concept of the rules and structure. If you so choose to use this as part of your learning process, keep in mind that it is a bit older, but the strategy and basic game play remain the same to this day.
Step 1: Game Set Up
In the game of Bingo, you have at least one playing card. The card has B-I-N-G-O spelled across the top with a column of five numbers below each one. The letter B has any combination of the numbers one through fifteen below it, I has sixteen through thirty, N has thirty one through forty five, G has forty six through sixty and O has sixty one through seventy five. The caller calls out the letter-number combinations that they usually pick out of a container at random. You will have either a dot-marker or round, flat, most of the time semi-transparent game pieces you will use to mark what has been called.
You can play on more than one card if you so desire, or if the game specifies that you can. However, sometimes the game will call for you to only play one card at a time. Some games are also now run electronically to prevent the caller from cheating. This way, we eliminate any chance of playing the so-called "favorite game". There is also one "free" space in the dead center of each playing card. No matter what happens, this spot is marked, so if you wish, that can be the first thing you do when you receive your Bingo card.
Step 2: Game Play
After the game has begun, you will need to play close attention to what numbers are being called in relation to the numbers on your card. If any of the numbers called, you will want to mark your card or cards accordingly with your marker or game pieces. If you lose track or fall behind while the numbers are being called, you may have the benefit of having a screen to refer back to if it is run electronically. If not, most of the time, you can ask the caller what the last number or numbers were and get that information from them. If this does not work, you will just have to pay attention and hope for the best and that you didn't miss too much.
Multi-tasking is definitely a plus when playing bingo, as it can get confusing if you don't. The letter-number combinations will be called out in a format such as "B 12" or "O 67". This will relate to your card directly, if you have that specific combination on your card. If not, you do not mark anything as there is no reason to. Playing on more than one card may also increase your odds in your favor, but be wary, if you are not the greatest at paying attention to just one card, this may not be your best tactic.
Step 3: Winning
The overall object of the game depends on what the game type is. In all game types, the caller will check your card, again, to avoid cheating. Blackout Bingo is where all of the numbers on your card must be marked. Four Corners is where, you got it, your card must be marked on each of the numbers in each corner. X Bingo is where you must have an X on your card. This means getting two lines connected by the free space either diagonally or strait vertical and horizontal. Traditional Bingo is where you are just playing to get one strait line. It doesn't matter where the line is or which direction it's going as long as it is five numbers long.
The first player to get Bingo and shout out the word "Bingo" is the winner. However, in some games, there is more than one winner spot, so don't be discouraged. In some there are only one, but usually, you can play as many times as you want, so as long as it's fun for you, keep playing! If you do for some odd reason find yourself losing a lot and hardly marking any numbers, you can always try some other time, today just may not be your day. Good luck!
