An accomplished bass guitar player relies on the ability to play individual notes of chords that accompany a musical melody. Artists beginning to play the bass guitar start by learning the parts of the bass including the neck, strings and frets and by studying concept of musical notes. This page, which includes an instructional video, covers the basics of how to play an F sharp note on a bass guitar.
There are 12 notes in the musical scale, represented by the letters A through G and tones called sharps and flats. The notes on a four string bass guitar - that is standard tuned - when played in the open position are; E, A, D and G. The frets on the neck of the bass guitar allow the musical artist to close the string (shorten the length of the string) which changes the tone. Each fret changes the note by a 1/2 (musical) step. Playing an open string and the 12th fret on the same string represents one entire musical octave - or the same note one octave higher. Therefore, when playing an F sharp note on any string of the bass guitar, one can play it again on the same string by moving 12 frets up or down.

Step 2: Locate and Play the F Sharp Notes
As demonstrated in the above video, you can play an F sharp note on each string on the four string bass guitar. Remember, for any string, you can play the same note in a different octave if you move move 12 frets higher or lower. Another way to quickly find an F sharp note when you have already located one note location is to "skip a string and go up two frets" as shown by the musician in the video.
The first fret location for the F flat note on a four string bass guitar is E: 2nd
Step 3: Practice and Memorize Note Locations
It can be helpful to learn the note locations by practicing one string at a time or by focusing on just the first five frets of all four strings and then moving on.http://www.5min.com/Video/How-to-Play-Bass-Notes-on-the-Bass---Intro-2459592 Either way, by simplifying practice sessions and memorizing the locations of every F sharp note on the fret board, an individual musician can build up the ability to quickly locate play all the F sharp notes of the bass guitar.
