How to Play an a Seven Suspended Four (A7Sus4) Chord on Guitar

The A seven suspended four chord, or A7Sus4, is a variation of the A chord that plays all six strings, but only two, the D and B strings, are fretted. The A major chord uses three fingers on a single fret, while the A7Sus4 chord uses two fingers on two different frets. In some ways, this chord may be a bit easier or more comfortable for beginners, and it only requires a few steps to learn.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fnrusqaVFAU

Make sure you review the names and positions of the strings on your guitar before you begin learning any chords. This will make it easier to learn variations, as well as let you move more smoothly between chords when you are playing songs. The mnemonic device "Elephants And Dogs Grow Big Ears" might be helpful if you need a hand in remember the strings. From left to right, they are low E, A, D, G, B and high E.http://www.abclearnguitar.com/guitar-strings.html The low E is the thickest string with the lowest sound. The high E is the thinnest string with the highest sound.http://guitarsecrets.com/guitar_secrets.htm

Step 1: Place First Finger

Pick up your guitar and grab the neck with your left hand. Take your index finger and place it on the D string (third down from low E) of the second fret.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fnrusqaVFAU Remember that frets are the the metal strips running across the neck of the guitar. The first fret is at the top of the guitar.http://www.blguitar.com/lesson/beginner/frets.html Hold the string tightly against the wood.

Step 2: Place Second Finger

For the the second finger placement, you can use either your ring finger or pinky finger to hold the B string of the third fret. Try using both to see which feels more natural. After you have two fingers firmly in place, practice holding this shape of the chord until you feel comfortable with it.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fnrusqaVFAU

Step 3: Strum the Chord

Once you feel satisfied with the fretted strings, strum the chord. The A7Sus4 chord strums all six strings. Make sure you are holding the D and B strings and playing the rest of them openly.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fnrusqaVFAU

Hit each string in a downward motion over the sound hole. Start slowly at first, making sure you are plucking all six strings, then increase the movement speed until the sound is smooth and cohesive. Practice again and again by repeating the finger placement and strumming technique.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fnrusqaVFAU
