How to Play Against Aggressive Poker Players

How to play against an aggressive poker player is one of the most important things to learn if you are going to be successful in your game strategy. Some poker players will raise every flop; some will raise pre and post flop yet fold against a strong bet. Still too others will raise once in a while and re-raise against other players. What does this all mean and how do you play against these styles of play to maximize your poker profits.

Over the next few steps we will be discussing three aggressive styles of poker playing: tight aggressive, loose aggressive and loose aggressive/passive. Each of these three forms of aggressive styles have weaknesses and strengths that are important “tells” when trying to beat them.

Every person sitting at a poker table will play some form of aggressive poker at some time during the course of the game. Beating their aggressive style of play is mostly a matter of knowing what to look. The flip side of this is also that by knowing how to play against aggressive players it will make your aggressive play stronger, giving you insight and knowledge like a poker professional understands.

Step 1: Learning to play against a Tight Aggressive Poker player.

Tight aggressive poker players have two basic strengths. First they fold a majority of the time waiting for stronger hands or hands they feel can turn a profit. Secondly when they do play a hand they generally raise pre-flop and re-raise post flop.

Playing against a tight aggressive poker player it is best to avoid doing so with weaker then mid-range quality cards (suited connectors, middle pocket pairs, etc) or good cards (suited face cards, high pocket pairs, etc). Using junk cards against a tight aggressive player will cost chips you can’t afford to lose.

A skilled poker player using tight aggressive play will change up their playing style from time to time to throw off their opponents. This allows them to play weaker cards and enabling them to bluff effectively. This is the time when you will need to calculate the odds of them having a strong hand verses them having a weak hand when compared to your hand. If you place a bet and they call or re-raise chances are they either have what they believe to be the strongest hand or they changed up to a loose aggressive play.

Step 2: Learning to play against Loose Aggressive Player

Loose aggressive players generally raise and re-raise with a variety of hands pre-flop. They also tend to bet on most flops and chase the better best hand to showdown. Many times loose aggressive players have a high bluff percentage. Because loose aggressive raise and plays most hands they give the illusion of always having good hands scaring lesser skilled players and a few good players off pots.

There are a number of ways to play this type of aggressive player. When you have a good hand, allow them to take the lead betting, also known as slow playing. Also try placing weak bets to induce them to raise. Both of these turn the table on a loose aggressive player so they commit a greater degree of their chips. The end result will see you walking away with a larger piece of the pie.

When you are sitting to the left of a loose aggressive player that has just raised pre-flop your hand quality doesn’t have to be quite as strong to call them. Many times you may find you have the better hand since they are calling with most any variation of hands.

If you are faced with a raise from a loose aggressive player re-raising on the button or in the blinds may get them to fold. This isn’t something you want to do frequently; doing so will make your playing style become predictable. By re-raising an aggressive player you accomplish two benefits: slowing them down and giving you a nicer pot size.

Step 3: Learning to play against Loose Aggressive/Passive Players.

The easiest aggressive player to beat is loose aggressive/passive. A loose aggressive/passive player will raise a lot of hands pre-flop but fold after. Many times loose aggressive/passive players are former tight aggressive players experimenting with looser play.

The best technique here is to call their raise or re-raise pre-flop when they show weakness. Re-raising them will many times cause them to fold leaving you to net a nice pot. Calling their raises will have two key effects on their aggressive play: Causes them to show weakness and forces them to commit with to pot with weak hands or fold.

Loose aggressive/passive players help you build your chip count or bankroll. By spotting a loose aggressive/passive player you will stand a greater chance of moving forward to the money rounds when playing against them correctly. Be aware also that many of the better players that play one of the above mentioned aggressive styles will often times change their style from time to time. This allows them to fool their opponents so they can later capitalize.http://www.pokerology.com/poker-school/texas-holdem/intermediate/playing-aggressive-players/
