In this video, KrisTina of the Paperdolls talks through how to play a G chord on the Guitar. This is part of the [Mahalo]] YouTube channel.
Step 1: Understanding the G Chord
The root chord or tonic of the G key is the G major chord. Learning this key will not teach all about the guitar but will provide a stable and strong base of music sense. Like the other chords G chord too has minor and major tones.
Step 2: Learning the G Chord
The G chord is situated inside the 3rd fret on the top or the E string. It is played with the middle or 3rd finger. First identify the chord and place your finger over it. Then with your small or pinky finger press the bottom sting of the third fret which is the high E. This should give you the two high octaves of the G chord.
Next, place index finger on the A string which is the 2nd string from the top inside the 2nd fret. Playing this will give you the G chord’s third note of the triad which is G, B and D that is the 1st, 3rd and 5th. Playing the open strings of G, D and B chords respectively will create two octave chords.
Step 3: How to Play
To begin with, you can feel the chords with your fingers and, once you are confident, you can use a pick to strike the G chord. The chords should always be played from low notes with the first beat on the top string and then back beat up on the bottom string.
To be able to play the G chord, you will first need to master the finger picking and then keep practicing it several times so that you are able to play the chord without ideating. Once you have mastered this chord, you can gradually add other chords and make your own music.
