This guide will take you through spring cleaning and organizing the yard sale at the same time. This will save bunches of time when the event arrives and with pre-planning you can have a yard in a few days time.

There are tips, hints, and suggestion on choosing the right date. http://www.yardsalequeen.com/ Many of the smaller communities around the United States have community wide yard sales and those are an excellent opportunity to be profitable.http://www.organizedhome.com

Having yard sales are a great way to get rid of clothing that your family has outgrown and no longer uses. On the other hand, shopping at yard sales will help you save money on clothing that your family can use at a fraction of cost that you would pay at a department store or even the Salvation Army.

Choosing the right date for the sale is important but if you are not priced right then you will not be successful. Visit your neighbors’ yard sales and see how they price different items. If you price your items as they do, then chances are you will be successful. You can even find yard sales online. http://www.yardsalesearch.com/

Step 1: Organizing Your Items

Most people have a yard sale in early summer, but the preparations begin long before that time. Many people sort through their items as part of their spring-cleaning rituals. This is a great idea. It may take a while to do, but in the end not only is the house clean and ready for summer it is also organized.

Gather empty boxes from your local stores before you begin spring cleaning and set them up on the bed or in the middle of the floor of the room you are currently working in. Mark each box so you know what clothing items or linen is in which box.

As you, clean out closets, sort through the clothing items. Have masking tape and a pen handy as you sort to price the clothes. In the summer you will be thankful you took the time now to do this. Hang up any items that will be kept and place the items you will be selling in the yard sale in boxes sorted by size or type.

If you have an extra room, you can store these boxes there. If possible, by a free sanding portable closet to hang the dresses, coats and other items which need to be hung. This way, the items will not need to be ironed before you have the yard sale. Keeping these items hanging will also look better and be easier in the end for you.

Step 2: Choosing a Date of Your Yard Sale

Choosing the date of your yard sale is sometimes a hard thing to do. It does not need to be hard. Here are a few suggestions at picking a profitable date.

Listen to the radio and be aware of different events going on in your town. If your town does town wide yard sale, be a part of that. This happens when the many members of a small town all have yard sales on the same day.

If your town is having a special event when you know there will be many people in town, schedule the sale for that weekend. It seems many people have yard sales the weekend before Memorial Day, the fourth of July, and of course, Labor Day so plan yours for this time too.

The last three weeks of July until perhaps the first weeks of August are bad for yard sales as many people are too busy with vacation. Having a successful yard sale really depends on your location. If you live in a place where people vacation often you might have a better chance then those who live in small towns.

Friday and Saturdays are good days for yard sales of all sizes. Check out the weather forecast and plan for that. If you had priced the items as you sorted them during spring cleaning you can be ready for a yard sale with a few days notice.

Run an ad in the newspaper and hang signs a few days before your sale.

Step 3: Setting Up the Location on the Day of the Sale

The day before the yard sale, put your tables in place and set out any other items needed for the sale.

Setting up the location of the yard sale usually means having to borrow some tables or at least making some temporary tables. Ask your family and friends if they can lend you a picnic table for the sale, unless of course you have enough space. A temporary table can be created by placing items on a two picnic benches covered with a piece of plywood.

Use a clothesline to hang items so they hang naturally if possible. Place shoes on the porch railing or on a sheet lying on the lawn. Use whatever space you have to place items.

Grab plastic bags to put the items you sell in, and have 20-40 dollars in small bills and change to make sales.

If you have electrical items to sell, place them on a table with electric handy. People are more inclined to buy electrical items that they know work.

Have family and friends help you set out the items in the evening hours, and go to bed early because you will be up very early in the morning. Prepare to be up before dawn to wake up a bit. At the break of dawn, the shoppers will begin coming and they will continue to come and buy your items all day long.
