Make sure you're holding the pick correctly. Check out this lesson if you're not sure how to properly hold a pick.
The Downstroke - Place the pick on top of the string you want to pluck and push down so that you land right on the following string. Don't pick the string too hard or else you'll get too twangy a sound out of the strings. However, if you pick the string too light, you won't get the fullest sound out of the strings. The best way to pick a guitar string is with enough force to land your pick on the next consecutive string.
* Hint: Tilt the side of the pick slightly downward and away from you in order to pick downstrokes with more ease. *
The Upstroke - Similar to how you pick a downstroke, an upstroke should land and rest on the previous string with a medium amount of pressure. You need to turn the angle of your wrist inward in order to achieve full pick control.
* Hint: Tilt the side of the pick slightly upwards and towards you in order to pick upstrokes with more ease. *
The faster you get at picking downstrokes and upstrokes in succession, you should be able to create a smooth sweeping-like motion across the strings.
