How to Peel Kiwi Fruit

The Kiwi Fruit is a well traveled Fruit and has been known by many names since its discovery. Called a "sunny peach" in china, a "strange fruit" in Hong Kong and Taiwan, it was introduced to New Zealand around 1924 where they developed a taste for the funny looking furry fruit and called it the "Chinese gooseberry". In the 1950's it was imported to America and only then was it given the name "Kiwifruit".http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kiwifruit

When the Kiwifruit is peeled and sliced it appears delicate with the vivid green flesh with the ring of black seeds, it has become quite popular in salad bars, and is becoming well known when mixed with strawberries and pineapple in drinks and in salads. This page shows you How to Peel Kiwi Fruit.

Tips

  • Apply only slight pressure so that the flesh of the fruit is not gouged.

  • Repeat the process if you need more than one peeled Kiwi.

  • Always cut away from you and handle sharp knives carefully.

Introduction

Kiwi fruit looks like it will be difficult to peel with its woody, textured skin, but once you know what to do you will find that it is a very easy fruit to peel. The following 3 steps will guide you through and provide you with the beautiful well shaped peeled kiwi. You will need only 3 simple tools. A very sharp knife, a teaspoon, and a cutting board.

Step 1: Starting the Cutting Process

You will only make 3 cuts using your knife.

  1. Using the cutting board, place the fruit on it's side.
  2. Slice off 1/4 inch of the fruit from both the bottom and the top.
  3. Sit the fruit up on one of the freshly cut ends.
  4. With your knife slide it lightly into the skin of the fruit just deep enough to touch the flesh.
  5. Gently score the fruit from top to bottom in one solid line.

Step 2: Begin the Seperation of the Fruit From the Skin.

If you examine your Kiwi fruit at this point you should see that your fruit is flat on the top and bottom and that there is a light vertical slit running completely down one side of the fruit.

Your next step will be to slip the tip of the teaspoon between the peel and the flesh of the kiwi right against the vertical cut. With the bowl of the spoon retaining the shape of the fruit gently slide the spoon around the green interior separating the peel from the kiwifruit with a careful and smooth motion. The Peel should stay intact until you have separated it in a full circle.

Step 3: Completiion and Serving Suggestions

The thinly sliced peel should slip right off and you are now able slice the kiwi for serving.

Placing the Kiwi on the cutting board slice the green Kiwi fruit into thin slices and gently place on your serving dish.

The kiwi looks most attractive when it is placed in a fan like pattern so that the green of the Kiwi fruit and the black of the seeds compliment each other.
