Do books, papers, and even garbage nearly fall out of your locker every time you open it? If so, it's time to get organized! If the thought of organizing your locker overwhelms you, this guide will provide you with step-by-step instructions on how to clean your locker.

Introduction
- If your locker has become a virtual garbage dump and you avoid using it because it's almost impossible to find anything in it, you're not alone. Many students, particularly those who are new to having a locker, often fail to keep it organized. However, if kept clean and orderly, school lockers are an invaluable tool—they can save you the trouble of having to carry your books around and also provide a place where you can find extra school and personal supplies if you run out.
Step 1: Get The Tools

- If your locker is small and lacking in shelf space, the task of keeping it organized can be made much easier if you get some bins and boxes in which to store your supplies. Visit a school supply or stationary store and get your choice of organizing tools for your locker. To make things even easier to find, you may want to buy color coded bins—then you can file your reports, books and papers by color; blue for science, red for English, and so on.
- To store smaller personal items and supplies like pens and pencils, look for small magnetic bins or pencil cases. You can stick these to the inside of your locker door—that way, you'll be able to find what you need quickly and easily.
Step 2: Start With a Clean Slate
- If your locker has become a pigsty, you'll need to clean it out before you can organize it efficiently. Set aside some time before or after school, or during a free period to do so. Separate everything in your locker into three piles:
- Garbage
- Stuff that you no longer need and can take home
- Items that you want to keep in your locker
- Then, throw out any garbage, place the items you want to take home in your backpack or book bag.
Step 3: Get Organized!
- Once you have gotten rid of what you don't need, it's time to organize what's remaining. Look at what you're left with and place the items in order of how often you're likely to use them. Put them back in your locker, placing things you use less often near the back and the things that you use every day near the front or in another accessible space. If your locker is equipped with hooks or coat hangers, use them to hang up your jacket and gym clothes. If not, fold any clothes neatly and place them on a shelf.
Step 4: Keep it Up
- The hard part is now over. The only thing left to do is keep it up. Although it may be tempting to just open the door and toss things into your locker, take the extra few seconds to place things in their designated spots. You'll be grateful that you did the next time you're in a hurry and don't have to search through piles of old papers and garbage to find that book you need for class.
