Introduction
- Garages do double and triple duty in most American households. Each garage is as unique as the family who uses it. No one garage organizing system will work for everyone, but following a few basic principles can help you make the most of the space you have,
Step 1: Assign Space for Each Function
- List out all of the functions your garage serves. Does it need to contain a recycling center or a work bench? Do you store gardening tools, trash cans, outdoor toys, bicycles, or cleaning supplies? Think about whether or not any of these functions can be relocated somewhere else. Take the remaining needs and formally assign space to each of them.
Step 2: Arrange Each Space
- When organizing each space, consider investing in storage solutions, such as wall racks for bicycles, hooks, and shelving units to increase the storage space. Remember to place frequently used items in locations that are easy to access and replace. If something can be put away easy, it's more likely to be put away. Make sure that storage for children's items is at a child's eye-level.
Step 3: Throw Things Out
- While organizing the garage, keep an eye out for trash. Broken or damaged items should be discarded, not stored "just in case" you can fix them. Outgrown or unused things should be donated to charity. Don't waste valuable storage space on items you are not using.
Garage Organization Tips
- Look up! Garages often have rafters than can be utilized to store infrequently used or seasonal items, such as Christmas decorations.
- Use transparent containers, and clearly label them.
- Consider stackable recycling bins to minimize the floor space used. Some actually come with a wheelable frame, to make it easy to bring the to the curb in one trip.
- Wall brackets can neatly store rakes, hoes, and brooms.
