Cookies are staples for Easter, Halloween and of course, Christmas but anytime is perfect for homemade cookies. These sweet confections are a handful of love for anyone who eats them.

Step 1: Organizing a Cookie Swap

Choose a date a few weeks before Christmas or another major holiday where homemade cookies are typical holiday fare. Most people have hectic holiday schedules so plan your exchange three to four weeks ahead of the holiday to assure that everyone has cookies at the start of the holiday season.

When sending out the invitations let the people, know how many dozens of cookies they should bring. If there will be eight people at the cookie exchange, each need to bring eight dozen cookies to share with the group. The amount of cookies directly depends on how many you invite to the exchange, ask the group to bring one less dozen of cookies than people invited.

On the invitations, please remind each guest to bring a recipe card with each dozen of cookies so that the other guests can bake the cookies. Cookie exchanges are a great way to get good recipes and ideas for the sweet confections.

Ask each guest to bring a can of prepared frosting, or if the host will be providing the icing ask the guest to bring a small container of decorations. These decorations can include red-hot candy, sprinkles, silver balls, or any other type of small candy.

Step 2: Hosting Duties of the Cookie Swap

The hosting duties of this cookie swap are fairly simply and straightforward. Aside from the invitations, the host needs to plan on how the day of the exchange its self will happen. With some pre-planning, it can go off without a hitch.

Sugar cookies are a staple at Christmas time, as well as Easter for many families. These types of cookies are good plain but many people like to decorate them as well. The host can purchase items needed to make icing and have the guest each bring a small container of the candies, which go on top.

Pick up a box of gallon size plastic bags for any cookies that need to be separated during transport for your guest. Any confection, which has powered sugar or chocolate, should not be mixed with other types of cookies during transport or flavors will mingle.

Ask each guest to bring some icing. The host should provide the food coloring and the containers to mix. The food coloring of course is to dye the frosting into the festive colors.

As each guest brings in their cookies, they should be placed on a counter top or unused tabletop. The host should keep each type of cookie in its own area so it is easy for the guests to walk in front of the area to grab the cookies.

Step 3: Cookie Swap ideas

The host may also want to have lunch cooking in a crock-pot, to feed the guests before, during, or after the decorating. This way along with the decorating, and merry making the guests will have something hot and healthy to eat.

Hot homemade potato soup, macaroni and cheese or anything else the host chooses to cook will help make memories of a perfect day. Use the crock-pot, as a time saver and food is ready when the group feels like eating. Serving and clean up is easy too, so the host can relax more with the guest.

If the host does not want to serve a meal, finger foods are a welcome part of the festivities. Purchase crackers and a cheese ball, or pepperoni and cheese. Fancy sandwiches will also be welcome at most of these festive parties.

The host can add to the environment and festive atmosphere of the party by playing seasonal music. If this is a Christmas cookie swap having [[]Christmas Carols]] playing in the background is always a good idea.

The host can purchase small gift boxes so the guest can take the cookies home safely. Large decorated Christmas platters from a dollar store will also work to transport the cookies and it is a small gift for the guests.
