If the last time you opened you medicine cabinet, everything fell onto the counter, or if you keep buying more toothpaste because you can't find the last three tubes you bought in the mess under the sink, it's time to get organized. All you need is determination, and the tips on this page, to get started. Read on to learn how to organize a bathroom.
Introduction
- Most people start their day in the bathroom. Having it neat and organized will affect the attitude you face the day with. In order to get organized, you need to remove everything from the bathroom, sorting through your "stuff". Clean the bathroom, and replace the necessary items in an organized fashion, and you're done.
What You'll Need to Get Organized
2 large boxes or laundry bins
1 trash bag
A number of small boxes and containers to serve as "temporary organizing bins"
Cleaning supplies
Step 1: Clear Out the Bathroom

- This may sound brutal, but everything needs to go. Go through everything you have in your bathroom that isn't a permanent fixture and place it in one of three places:
- Cardboard Box A will hold everything you need that belongs in the bathroom.
- Cardboard Box B includes things you need, but that are better located somewhere other than the bathroom
- Expired medications, make-up you've had more than six months, items that are are broken, and trash all go into the garbage bag.
Step 2: Clean the Bathroom
- While your cabinets are empty, thoroughly clean the bathroom. You'll be more ruthless about returning items if all the surfaces are clean and sparkling. Wash the towels, bathmat, curtains and shower curtain as well.
Step 3: Organize the Bathroom
Go through Box A again, making sure that everything that's in it needs to be returned to the bathroom. Anything that causes you to hesitate goes into Box B, or the trash bag.
As you go, sort items into groups, and use small boxes and containers to organize similar items together. You may need to regroup things a few times to find the right size box for each group.
After you've gone through and replaced everything, using temporary containers, take a look around the bathroom and determine what types of organizing supplies (such as baskets, jars, etc) you'll need.
Go shopping, either online or in person, to purchase the organizing supplies you need.
Replace the temporary containers with the real supplies, and enjoy your clean, organized bathroom.
Bathroom Organization Tips
- While shopping for the permanent containers, take a look at other bathroom organization supplies that may work for you. It's important to do this after you go through what you have, not before. If you shopped before, you could purchase unnecessary supplies which will then become more clutter you need to deal with.
- Consider adding shelving to create storage space for towels and linens.
- Wall mounted shampoo dispensers can eliminate the need for shampoo, conditioner, and bath gel bottles.
- Be careful of any new items you bring in to the bathroom; you don't want things to get out of control again.
