Step 1: Know How You Can Get Pregnant
In order to fully understand how not to get pregnant, you need to know how you can get pregnant. The easy answer is that you can get pregnant, or make someone pregnant, anytime you have unprotected intercourse. Pregnancy can happen in any and all of the following situations:- Having sex while standing up
- Having sex while the female partner is menstruating
- Having sex for the first time
- Having sex while breast-feeding

Step 2: Understand Your Pregnancy Prevention Options
As many of us have heard time and again, no birth control method is 100% effective except for abstinence. For most consenting adults, however, abstinence is not a feasible option. There are several other ways you and your partner can avoid unwanted pregnancy.- Condoms — One of the most common methods of birth control, condoms not only prevent pregnancy but also most sexually transmitted diseases. They are not 100% effective, and there are always risks of a condom breaking or leaking if you do not use it correctly.
- Birth control pills — Also incredibly effective, the Pill is an incredibly popular form of pregnancy prevention, and is close to 98% effective when used properly.http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/A467912
- Pills must be taken every day, at around the same time each day, in order to be fully effective. Most pregnancies that occur when a woman is on the pill result from user-error rather than anything being wrong with the Pill itself.
- If you miss a day, some pills will advise you to double up and you will be fine. Others recommend a back-up form of birth-control for a set amount of time. Always check with your gynocologist if you are unsure what you or your partner is unsure what to do after missing a pill.
- Diaphragms — Not as effective as the pill, but a good preventive measure. Diaphragms have the drawback of having to be inserted prior to sexual activity, so make sure you know the requirements before selecting this method.
- Natural methods, including withdrawal or family planning — Some of the least effective means of preventing pregnancy as no woman's period is 100% regular, and sperm can still be released prior to ejaculation.http://digghealth.com/pregnant/
- Permanent sterilization — A good option if you know you do not ever want children, or if you have children and do not want anymore. In a woman, the fallopian tubes are tied off so no eggs reach the uterus, and in a man, the vas deferens is snipped to prevent sperm from being released.
