Introduction
To be able to negotiate, one should first understand what a negotiation is. When you negotiate, you are trying to acquire something from someone else. It may be money or it may be a service. It could be any number of things. To do it effectively you have to be prepared for compromise. One of the key aspects of negotiation is belief in what you are negotiating for. If you don't believe in the idea you are trying to negotiate, then it can be very difficult and even impossible for you to try to convince someone else that the idea is worthy. So, gather you thoughts and focus on the idea that you wish to present.

Step 1: Gather Facts
If you have an idea you wish to present or a cause you wish to represent in your negotiations, the first thing you need to do is to gather facts about the idea or cause. Your facts are the foundation for negotiation. They are what you will use to convince someone that they are going to do something for you. For instance, if you are trying to negotiate for a better price on a used car, you would do well to point out other cars in its class that are lower priced and get better gas mileage. -
Step 2: Set Goals
What exactly are you negotiating for? What is your goal? Figure out what your goal is by comparing similar situations. If you are trying to negotiate a contract for example, pull out a similar contract and go over the terms of it. Think about how successful this contract was and how it could have been made better. Decide what your goal is and if it is possible to do even better than that goal. You must also consider how far from that goal you are willing to stray. For instance, if you negotiate a contract and they want the work done in 1 week but you want to do it in 2. Is it actually possible to do it in one or can you find a middle ground? -
Step 3: Create a Plan
Once you have your idea, facts and goals, you are ready to develop your plan. Consider how this situation is best approached. Is this an idea that needs to be eased into or is this something that needs to be presented in an abrupt manner. What is the best form of communication? How will you present yourself? Consider the factors of you idea when you are considering how to present yourself. For instance, if you are trying to negotiate for a new clothing line within your company based on your ideas, you would want to dress in some way that would promote your line and speak well for you. Likewise if you are negotiating for funds to help a charitable organization, you may want to negotiate in a setting ran by the organization.

Step 5: Present the Idea
Once you are ready to present your idea, you must do so in an assertive manner that borders on being aggressive. This does not mean you should become violent with the person you are negotiating with. What is does mean is that you should be excited. Create your own atmosphere by presenting yourself in such a manner as to say with your body "I won't take no for an answer!". Use some of the tips below as you begin your negotiation.- Be confident. People are less likely to say no to someone whose body language conveys a "can do" attitude.
- Know your limits and stick to them.
- Be firm.
- Avoid distractions. It's hard to negotiate when there are too many distractions to keep the mind focused on the matter at hand.
- Be prepared for compromise but not for capitulation.
- Present your facts and the history of success for similar ideas.
- Keep it simple. The simpler the message you are trying to get across is, the more likely you will be to succeed.
- Be prepared to listent to thier side.
