Introduction
Before getting started, make sure that you have the equipment that is right for your lawn. Depending on the size of your yard, you will need either a riding lawn mower or a walk-behind mower. You will also need a weed whip. Grab yourself a glass of ice cold water and a t-shirt, but forget the shorts or else you might rip up your legs when you begin weed whipping. -
Step 1
The first thing you need to do is determine which way to cut the grass. It is ideal to change the direction that you mow from week to week. For instance, one week you will mow parallel with the street, the next week you will mow perpendicular to the street and the following week you will mow diagonally. This keeps the lawn from laying in one particular direction. -
Step 2
After you have determined which direction you will be cutting the grass, you need to secure all of the tools needed for the job. Make sure the gas and oil are filled on your mower and weed whip. Check the weed whip to make sure there is sufficient string to get through the whole task. You don't want to get half way through and realize you don't have enough to complete it. -
-
Step 3
Once you've got all of your equipment, walk the yard and search for any items that might get run over while cutting the lawn. Make sure to remove branches, rocks and any paper products. Picking up the large napkins or other trash now will save you lots of time later. If you run over garbage, it can make quite a mess. Tiny pieces of paper or other stray items will litter your beautiful yard. Picking up rocks and limbs will also help you keep your mower blades sharp, as a rock or landscaping brick will quickly ruin the blades on your mower. -
