How to Match Your Lipstick To Your Complexion

  • Have you ever bought a lipstick that looked good in the store, but once you brought it home and tried it on, it looked garish, cheap or just . . . well, strange? Knowing how to match your lipstick to your complexion will save you wasted effort and money and will help you find the right shade to complement your whole face. Because, let’s face it, most of us have dozens of tubes of lipstick, only one or two of which we actually wear.

  • Tips

    • If you are unsure of your skintone by looking at your face, pinch the skin under your arm or anywhere where the sun doesn’t reach, and observe the color there.
    • You can also look at the veins under your arm—if they appear green, you probably have a warmer skin tone; if they look blue, you have a cool skin tone.


  • Introduction

    To figure out how to choose the right lipstick, you first need to determine your skin tone, then find the tones in a potential lipstick. Once you know this, you will be able to easily and instantly figure out if the prospective lipstick will look gorgeous or gross on you.

    For your skin tone, you will need a white shirt, cream-colored shirt, and a mirror. For the lipcolor, you will need a piece of white paper.

  • Step 1: Determine your Skin Tone

    Warm or cool? To determine if your skin has warm or cool tones, try on a true white shirt, and an off-white or cream-colored shirt. If the white shirt looks best and complements your complexion, you probably have a cool skin tone. If the cream one does, you have warm tones. Keep in mind that cool skin tones are most common. If you can't tell, you are either lucky, with a completely neutral color (which means you'll look good in most lip colors), or chances are good you have a cool tone.

    Which color? Skin tones can be classified further as fair, tanned, rosy, olive or dark. Hold a white piece of paper up to your face, and by contrasting your face with the paper, see which of those descriptions fits your complexion the best.

  • Step 2: Determine the Dominant Colors of the Potential Lipstick

    To figure out which tones are prevalent in the lipstick, mark a sample of the tester lipstick on a piece of white paper. Which colors are most prevalent in the lipstick? Red, orange, pink, purple, blue, brown, or anything else?

  • Step 3: See if the Lipstick Matches your Skin Tone by Using the List Below

    Check to ensure the dominant color of the lipstick is on the list of colors for the best description of your complexion:

    Fair- pinks, reddish orange, very light purples Tanned- true pinks Rosy- reds and pinks Olive- warm reds, brown shades Dark- rose, magenta, shades of purple

    If your skin tone is warm, the warmer (yellow undertoned) version in each color category will suit you. If your tone is cool, go for the cooler colors (blue undertones) in each category.
