Introduction
These simple do-it-yourself projects are suitable for any skill level. In this article, you will be instructed how to create a recipe jar, harvest candy bags and a cornucopia pouch. Depending on your sewing abilities, it could take anywhere from 15 to 45 minutes to complete it. However, the jar and bag should only take 5 to 10 minutes.
Recipe Jar
Everyone loves a good recipe. Collect a few of your best recipes and place them in this festive jar for your family and friends to enjoy.
Directions:
- Fill the jar with a few recipes printed on half sheets of paper. You may even want to go the extra mile and write them by hand. Place aside.
- Use the lid of your jar to trace its circumference onto the wrong side of your cloth.
- Draw a circle two inches larger than this circle around the old one.
- Cut out your shape. Then, turn under a 1/4 inch hem. To make it easier to hem, make small slits with your scissors along the edge in the hem allowance ever inch around.
- Iron down your hem.
- Sew the hem closed with a simple straight stitch.
- Center the finished cloth over the closed jar and tie down with ribbons.
- Print out the provided leaf tags on at least three different colored papers
- Cut out the leaves. Then, punch a hole in them.
- Tie the cards among the ribbons.
- Write the name of a guest on the larger tag.
Harvest Candy Bags
The kids and adults at your party will love you for this delicious holiday treat.
- Supplies:
- Cellophane candy bags
- Candies with a Autumn color scheme
- Green, orange and yellow ribbons
- Fall inspired card stock
- Hole punch
Directions:
- Pour your candies into the bag.
- Twist the opening together and tie it closed with the ribbons.
- Print out the provided leaf tags on at least three different colored papers
- Cut out the leaves. Then, punch a hole in them.
- Tie the cards among the ribbons.
- Write the name of a guest on the larger tag.
Leaf Tag Pattern
Cornucopia Pouch
Don't get intimidated by the sewing in this craft. You don't even need a sewing machine to make this horn of plenty filled with treats and blessings.
- Supplies:
- Fat quarter of harvest themed fabric
- Fat quarter of fabric in contrasting color for lining
- Candies with a Fall color scheme
- 24 inch decorative braid with tassels
- Fall inspired card stock
- Transfer paper
- Sewing needle
- Matching thread
- Scissors
Directions:
- Fold both fabrics in half and stack them together.
- Using transfer paper, trace the provided pattern on the wrong side of your fabric. Don't forget to add the decorative dotted line guides as well.
- Draw a 1/4 inch hem around the shape.
- With the whole stack in hand, cut out the cornucopia. Now, you will have two pieces of your main fabric and two pieces of your lining.
- To make side A, take one of the main and liner fabrics and place them right sides together.
- Make a straight stitch across the top hemline.
- Now, fold it wrong sides together and iron.
- At this point, straight stitch along the decorative lines.
- Repeat steps 5 through 8 with the other two pieces of cloth to make side B.
- Place the two halves together with the main fabrics touching.
- Straight stitch the sides closed.
- Turn the pouch right side out.
- Whip stitch your braid to the top edge.
- Fill it with treats.
- You can also write some of the things you are thankful for on small cards and slip them inside.
