Step 1: What You Need to Make Thanksgiving Candied Yams
Ingredients
- 4 pounds yams or peeled sweet potatoes
- 2 cups orange juice
- 3 cups corn syrup
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 1/2 cups brown sugar (firmly packed)
- 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup vanilla extract
- 2 teaspoons lemon or orange zest
- 2 tablespoons flour
Equipment
- One large stock pot
- Two large mixing bowls
- Whisk
- Medium-sized baking dish
Step 2: How to Prepare Thanksgiving Candied Yams
- Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F
- Cut yams or sweet potatoes into bite-sized pieces
- Boil the yams or sweet potatoes in a stock pot until tender (about 15 minutes)
- Strain the yams and set aside
- Combine orange juice, corn syrup, vanilla, nutmeg, cinnamon and lemon or orange zest together in a bowl using a whisk
- Using a second bowl, mix sugar and flour
- Add yams or sweet potatoes to a medium-sized baking dish, pour sugar/flour mixture over them
- Pour orange juice mixture over the top
- Bake for 25 minutes
Step 3: Thanksgiving Candied Yams Variations
- Miniature marshmallows can be added over the yams before they are put in the oven
- Raisins or pineapple chunks can be added for extra flavor
- Maple syrup can also be added
- Walnuts can be added to the dish for extra crunch
