Whether you are a die-hard Trekker or just watch the occasional episode or movie, dressing up as your favorite Star Trek character for Halloween can be a fun and simple way to celebrate the holiday and pay homage for a legendary show. Read on to learn how to make Star Trek Halloween costumes.
Star Trek costumes are easy to make, so if you are less-than-handy with the needle and thread but still want to make your own costume, this is an excellent choice. What's more, these costumes are fairly cheap to construct. If you don't already have the clothing and fabrics in your closet, you can head down to the thrift store and pick up some inexpensive versions. Beyond finding the right duds, the only work required involves dying, cutting, gluing, and folding. You certainly don't need to be a seamstress to make your costume turn out great!
Tips
For a sexy female costume, use a tightly-fitting minidress instead of the long sleeved shirt and pants, and pair with knee-high boots
Step 1: What You Need to Make the Costumes
Here's what you need:
- A white long-sleeved shirt
- Fabric dye, in red, blue or yellow
- A black T-shirt, with a collar that pokes out when worn under the long sleeved shirt
- Black fabric (for Next Generation costume only)
- Black pants
- Black shoes or boots
- Aluminum foil
- A hot glue gun
Step 2: Original Star Trek Costumes
To make an original Star Trek costume:
- Dye the long-sleeved shirt in the color of your choice. The engineering crew wears yellow, the navigation team wears red, and science or medical crew wear blue.
- Shape the aluminum foil into the Star Trek insignia. Basically, this is a triangle with an arch in the bottom, curving upward, placed over a sideways oval.
- Glue the aluminum foil badge to the left upper chest area on the long sleeved shirt.
- Put on the black T-shirt, and put the long sleeved shirt on over it. Wear with black pants and shoes. http://diyfashion.about.com/od/costumes/qt/Star_Trek_Uniform.htm
Step 3: Star Trek Next Generation Costumes
If you want to look like you stepped out of a Star Trek Next Generation episode, you will need to tweak the costume slightly. Cut strips of black fabric to cover the top of your long-sleeved shirt, down to about the edge of the shoulders. Glue in place. Then, cut a wide triangle shape to fit at the bottom of the shirt, with it's peak off-centered to the left side of the waist. It should be pointing roughly to your badge. Glue when you are happy with the placement. For help, see photos. http://www.ehow.com/how_5084685_make-star-trek-costumes.html
