How to Make Salmon Croquettes

Tired of eating the same old salmon? Try making salmon croquettes—a delightful treat of fried salmon patties, which originated in the southern United States.

Deliciously inexpensive, especially if you have some leftover salmon from another meal, mix up these scrumptious patties and serve them with your favorite sauce, like Remoulade sauce (a Cajun tarter sauce) and sides.

Although the salmon itself provides a delectable flavor, you can jazz up your croquettes by adding your choice of savory spices, seasonings and herbs. Altering what you add to your croquette mixture can completely change the taste.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 pound cooked salmon or 1 can of canned salmon

  • 1/2 cup bread crumbs

  • 1 small onion, chopped

  • 1 egg, beaten

  • Vegetable oil

  • Optional: Salt, pepper, lemon juice, hot sauce, seafood seasoning, or any other desired herbs and spices.

Making the Salmon Croquettes

  • Salmon croquettes are easy to prepare.
  1. If using canned salmon, drain and remove the bones.
  2. Flake salmon apart with your fork in a mixing bowl.
  3. Add the egg, onion and half the bread crumbs to the salmon.
  4. Season to taste.
  5. Mix well.
  6. Form salmon mixture into equal sized patties.
  7. Cover the patties with the additional bread crumbs.
  8. Heat oil in a skillet over medium high heat.
  9. Add croquettes to hot oil.
  10. Fry about 2 minutes on each side.
    • Patties are done when they are golden brown.
  11. Drain on a paper towel.
