Puppets can be as simple as a paper bag on a hand or as elaborate as a detailed robotic creation that responds to computer prompts. Learning how to make puppets is quick and easy, with numerous options as to the types and styles of puppets that can be made.
A simple and quick craft for children on a rainy day, puppets are appropriate for children of all ages. The children get to assemble the puppets, and then use their creativity in performing a puppet show. It's also a popular activity for a birthday party.
Two types of puppets are most commonly made at home are sock puppets and paper bag puppets. Each can be created in a short amount of time with craft items generally found in most homes. A number of items can be used to decorate puppets including scraps of fabric and construction paper, pipe cleaners, yarn, feathers, googly eyes, buttons, markers and paint.
Save scrap items you have around the house in a "puppet kit", ready to whip out when needed. Puppets can be made inexpensively by all ages.
How to Make a Monkey Sock Puppet
Making a monkey sock puppet is a classic favorite, using just a pair of sock, scissors, a needle, thread and some decorations. One sock is used for the body, while the other is cut up to create legs and a tail. Many will choose to use a classic sock monkey sock, with the brown body and red heel, however any sock can be used in a pinch.
Step 1: What You'll Need
A basic puppet can be made by using a paper bag or a sock as a base by gluing on features such as eyes and hair that are made from scrap items you probably have around the house. Very young children can make paper bag puppets with just a bag and a crayon.
Step 2: Gather Materials and Supplies
Step 3: Make Puppets
- Gather the kids and set up your supplies on a work surface. Be sure to supervise children, especially younger children, around potential dangerous items like scissors and hot glue guns.
- Pick either a sock or paper bag to start the puppet.
- Locate the heel portion of the sock, using the other side of the fabric directly across from the heel to place the puppet's mouth.
- Decorate the paper bag folded, using what would be the bottom of the opened bag as the face. Alternately, decorate on the full, flat side of the bag, adding the face there for an opened-bag style puppet, better for younger children.
- Add a face to each puppet using the various materials you have on hand. Connect items to socks using the hot glue gun and use standard glue for paper bags. Animal puppets can also be made using a similar process.
- Continue to decorate the puppet until it forms a fun and creative creature.
- Once the puppets are done, show off the work with a puppet show.
