Step 1: What You'll Need to Make Peppermint Patties

- 3/4 cup sweetened condensed milk
- 1 1/2 teaspoons peppermint extract
- 4 cups confectioners' sugar
- 3 cups semisweet chocolate chips
- 2 teaspoons shortening

- Mixing Bowl
- Waxed paper
- Small candy scoop
- 2 quart saucepan
- Fork
Step 2: How to Make Peppermint Patties
- Combine the sweetened condensed milk and peppermint extract in a bowl.
- Add the confectioners sugar a half a cup at a time, beating well after each addition.
- Using small candy scoop, drop balls of the mixture onto waxed paper.
- Flatten the balls with your fingers, smoothing out the candies into circles about 1/4 inch thick.
- Let the patties dry for an hour, then flip them over and dry for a second hour.
- Heat chocolate with shortening in a saucepan, stirring constantly until meted.
- Remove from heat.
- Lay a patty across a fork, and lower the fork into the melted chocolate.
- When patty is covered, remove it from the chocolate and slip it off carefully onto the waxed paper.
- Repeat for the remaining patties
- Let the patties cool on the waxed paper until the chocolate is set.
