Although making opera cookies is a two step process, operas are a very simple cookie to make. IYou make the base first, and then mix up the topping in the same bowl while the base bakes. You do not need to wash out your mixer after baking the base, as the flour and butter crumbs will blend in with the topping without a problem. -
Step 1: What You Need to Make Opera Cookies
Lay out all the ingredients before you begin. Make sure the butter is at room temperature, so that it will blend well with the flour and sugar when you may the base.

- Mixing bowl and spoon, or electric mixer
- 11 by 7 baking pan
- Rubber spatula
- Sharp knife
Step 2: How to Make Operas
The opera cookies will be ready in under an hour. Most of the time is baking; the preparation is very simple.
- Preheat the oven to 350.
- Grease an 11 by 7 pan.
- Combine the butter, sugar, and flour and pat into the prepared pan.
- Bake for 15 minutes.
- Remove pan from oven and turn temperature down to 300.
- Combine remaining ingredients and pour on top of the dough.
- Bake for 35 minutes.
- Allow to cool and slice into bars.
