Introduction

Moussaka, pronounced "MOO-sah-kah" is a tradional Greek dish. Traditional moussaka is made with lamb, but you can substitute ground beef if that is more to your taste.

Step 1: What You Need to Make Moussaka

  • 6 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1/4 cup chopped onion
  • 1 pound ground lamb or beef
  • 1/2 teaspoon allspice
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
  • 1 cup tomato sauce
  • 3 eggplants
  • 3 eggs, lightly beaten
  • 2 cups light cream
  • 2 tablespoons minced parsley
  • 1 cup dry bread crumbs
  • 4 tablespoons melted butter

Step 2: Prepare the Eggplant

  1. Cut the eggplant into slices 1/4 inch thick, crosswise.
  2. Sprinkle the eggplant liberally with salt, and allow to drain between paper towels for 30 minutes.
  3. Heat 4 tablespoons of olive oil in a skillet on medium high heat.
  4. Brown the eggplant quickly on each side.
  5. Set the eggplant aside to drain on paper towels

Step 3: How to Make Moussaka

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Grease a 2 1/2 quart baking dish.
  3. Heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a skillet and sauté the onion until soft.
  4. Add the ground meat to the onion and cook until no longer pink.
  5. Add the seasonings and tomato sauce to the skillet; cover and simmer 30 minutes.
  6. Mix the eggs, cream, parsley and half cup of bread crumbs together.
  7. Assemble the moussaka by alternating layers of eggplant and meat sauce together, starting and ending with eggplant.
  8. Pour the egg custard on top.
  9. Top with the remaining bread crumbs, then drizzle the melted butter over all.
  10. Bake 40 minutes, or until set.
