Introduction
- If you are enthusiastic about photography and willing to invest time and effort into learning the details of it, the field of professional photography can be a profitable and flexible job with much independence to set your own hours. There are also other ways to make an extra income making money which do not necessarily require much previous experience.
Step 1: Becoming a Professional Photographer
- If you are a talented photographer and want to pursue photography as a full-time profession, the best option is to become a professional photographer. Professional photographers can work in many fields, for example fashion, journalism, and marketing. They can also be self-employed and open up their own studio. Becoming a professional photographer is a process that includes education (at home or in a school), training, making a portfolio, making connections and promoting your services. If you want to eventually live solely on income from photography, you will need to develop many different skills and much knowledge. Step 2: Other Photography Jobs
- There are other ways to support yourself on photography than becoming a professional photographer. Some full-time jobs in photography require little experience, but the pay will naturally be much lower as well.
- One option is to become a school photographer, who travel from school to school and take pictures of students. They are typically hired by an agency.
- Amateur photographers often work in family-oriented stores where they take pictures primarily of children and families. These photographers are hired either by the store or an outside agency.
- Amateur freelance photographers can also get jobs with other companies who need photographers, for example lawyers or insurance companies.
Step 3: Selling Pictures
- Besides becoming a professional photographer or finding another full-time job in photography, you can also earn extra income by taking and selling pictures.
- Participate in photography contests.
- Stock photography Web sites allow you to upload your images and sell the right to them, so that other companies can buy and use the images. You are usually paid a one-time fee, but some stock photo sites pay you revenue every time they sell your picture.
