  • What You Need to Make Mashed Potatoes

    Lay out all the ingredients before you begin to make the mashed potatoes.

    Ingredients You'll Need for Mashed Potatoes

    • 5 pounds potatoes
    • 2 cups milk
    • 1 stick (8 tablespoons) unsalted butter, diced
    • Salt and pepper to taste

    Equipment You'll Need for Mashed Potatoes

    • 6 quart saucepan
    • Small saucepan
    • Colander
    • Electric mixer, whisk, or potato masher

  • How to Make Mashed Potatoes

    1. Peel and chop potatoes into 1-2" chunks
    2. Place potatoes in saucepan and cover with water by at least 2 inches.
    3. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat.
    4. Reduce heat to a simmer and cook until potatoes are tender when pierced by a fork. This will take about 20 minutes.
    5. Heat the milk a saucepan over low heat. Do not boil.
    6. Remove the potatoes from the heat and place in a colander to drain the water.
    7. Return the potatoes to the cooking pot, off the heat.
    8. Add the butter to the pot and mash with a whisk, potato masher, or an electric mixer.
    9. Add hot milk a little at a time, and mash until light and fluffy.
    10. Add salt and pepper to taste.

  • Mashed Potato Variations

    1. Add half a cup of parmesan cheese at the end.
    2. Replace the milk with half and half.
    3. If you're using red-skinned potatoes, do not peel before cooking. Mash the potatoes with the skins still on.
    4. Add 8 ounces of crumbled blue cheese or gorgonzola while mashing to make blue cheese mashed potatoes.
