Making your own laundry detergent is an economical and fairly easy thing to do. Another plus is that, with the formulas below, you will make an unscented cleaner that doesn't have unnecessary additives or too much soap that will irritate sensitive skin. These laundry detergent formulas are also heavy duty enough to clean greasy work clothes and cloth diapers. Read on, and you will soon know how to make laundry detergent that is as good or better than any commercial brand that you can buy in your local grocery store.
-
Tips
- Instead of Ivory soap, you can use laundry bar soap that is sometimes found in the laundry section.
- Add the liquid soap to the bottom of the top loading machine before you add the clothes.
- Neither of these laundry detergent formulas foam very much, but they work well anyway!
- Washing soda is also called soda ash, or sodium carbonate. You can buy larger quantities cheaply at swimming pool supply companies.
- You can also use the borax for killing pests such as ants and cockroaches.

Making a Powdered and Liquid Laundry Soap
The first part of this video describes how to make a powdered laundry detergent. First, you need a hand grater for grating a whole bar of Ivory soap (or equivalent type). Grate to a powder. Then you add both the washing soda and the borax in the recommended amounts. Mix with a spoon to obtain a uniform mixture. Store the mixture in a sealed container to keep out atmospheric moisture, or it will clump together. It takes only a heaping tablespoon for a front loading washer and 1/4 cup for a top loading washer. Works well on greasy work clothes, cloth diapers and regular laundry. Making the liquid laundry detergent is a bit more complicated than the powdered soap formulation, but it is still not difficult. In this case, you have to add the grated soap into a pot with enough water to cover it, bring the temperature up on the stove enough to melt it. Then you add the washing soda and borax to the melted soap and warm water. Note that the written instructions here make a smaller amount of liquid laundry soap than is discussed in the video.

Introduction
To make this laundry detergent, you first need to go to the grocery store and purchase the ingredients. Most grocery stores have washing soda and borax, and all of them have Ivory soap. Make sure that you have all of the equipment listed in the first step below, and if you do, you are ready to start. Recipes for both powdered and liquid laundry detergents are given, since both are in common use. It takes a little more time to do the liquid soap, but it should take no more than half an hour. -
Obtain the Ingredients and Equipment
- Ingredients:
- 1 box Washing Soda
- 1 box Borax
- 1 Bar of unscented plain soap, [Ivory] or equivalent
- Warm water (for liquid soap)
- Equipment
- Hand grater
- Large stirring spoon
- Measuring cup
- Food Processor (optional, for dry powder)
- Container for the soap after it is made, soap jugs or other suitable container
- Also for liquid soap making you will need:
- 4 quart pot - for liquid soap making
- 1 gallon milk jug
- Funnel
Making Powdered Laundry Soap
- Grate the bar soap into a powder, using a food processor or a cheese grater
- Add the grated bar soap to a 4 quart or larger container.
- Add 2 cups of washing soda.
- Add 2 cups of borax.
- Mix with a dry spoon, breaking up any chunks.
- Seal the container to prevent entrance of atmospheric moisture, which can cause clumping.
Making Liquid Laundry Soap
- Note that this recipe uses less ingredients than in the video.
- Grate 1/3 of a bar of soap
- Add the grated bar soap into a 4-quart pot
- Add 1.5 pints of warm water to the pot
- Turn on the stove burner and heat this mixture until all the soap is dissolved. Be patient and do not heat the mixture too rapidly.
- Add 1/2 cup of borax
- Add 1/2 cup of washing soda.
- Stir all of this until everything is dissolved.
- Pour the dissolved mixture into the 1 gallon milk jug using a funnel.
- Add hot tap water to this slowly to fill the milk jug to the top.
- Let this mixture sit for 24 hours and then pour in to liquid laundry soap or liquid softener jugs. The liquid will be thick and viscous. Use 1/2 a cup per washer load.
