How to Make Lasagna

What You'll Need

Ingredients: 
  • 1 cup onions, diced
  • garlic cloves, minced
  • 12 oz. ground beef
  • 8 oz. tomato sauce
  • 14.5 oz. tomatoes, chopped, in sauce
  • 1 tbsp dried Italian seasoning
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 6 dried lasagna noodles
  • 15 oz. ricotta cheese
  • 1 egg, lightly beaten
  • 1/4 cup Parmesan cheese, grated
  • 6 oz. shredded mozzarella cheese
Equipment: 
  • Oven
  • Large skillet
  • Burner
  • Large saucepan
  • Large pot
  • Colander
  • Large bowl
  • 2-qt rectangular baking dish
  • Ladle
  • Baking tray

How to Make Classic Lasagna

1. Preheat oven to 375º F (161º C). Heat skillet to medium. Add onions, garlic and ground beef. Cook six to nine minutes. Drain off fat.





2. Transfer skillet contents to large saucepan. Add tomato sauce, chopped tomatoes, Italian seasoning and black pepper. Stir and bring to a boil. Once cooked, set aside. This is the meat sauce.




3. In a large pot of boiling water, cook lasagna noodles 10 to 12 minutes until al dente. Rinse under cold water and drain.

4. Stir ricotta cheese, egg and grated Parmesan in large bowl. This is the filling of the lasagne.






5. Spread a half a cup of the meat sauce over the bottom of the baking dish. Layer three egg noodles across the bottom. Curly egg noodles capture the sauce better than straight ones.




6. Place half of the filling on top of the first layer of noodles. Add half of the remaining meat sauce on top of filling. Top with half of the mozzarella cheese. Top cheese with second layer of noodles. Top second layer with remaining filling. Top filling with remaining meat sauce. Top sauce with remaining mozzarella and any remaining Parmesan.

7. Place baking dish onto baking tray. Bake for 30 minutes. Remove from oven and let sit for ten minutes.

Béchamel Sauce

A béchamel sauce often goes well with lasagna. Here's how to make it:

Ingredients:

  • 3 cups milk
  • 3 tbsp flour
  • 3 tbsp butter
  • Salt and pepper

Equipment:

  • Saucepan
  • Burner
  • Spatula

Preparation Instructions:

1. In saucepan, melt butter on medium heat.

2. Add flour and stir well for about one minute.

3. Add milk and cook until mixture is steaming.

4. Turn down heat and simmer for a few minutes until sauce begins to thicken.

5. Add salt and pepper to taste.

Lasagna Tips & Tricks

If you want to make a vegetarian lasagna, simply chop several different vegetables and add them to the tomato sauce instead of the ground beef.

Never use aluminum pans to cook your lasagna in. The heat will cause the aluminum to make your lasagna taste bad.c

If you don't let the lasagna cool off after cooking, you will have a very hard time cutting it into pieces.
