How To Make Homemade Apple Pie

What You'll Need

Ingredients

  • 1 pie crust, rolled out to fit a 9-inch pie plate
  • 10-14 large apples, peeled, cored and thickly sliced (about 12 cups)
  • 1 1/2 tbsp flour
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp nutmeg
  • 2 tbsp butter, chopped
  • 2 tbsp milk or cream
  • 1 tbsp sugar mixed with 1/4 teaspoon of cinnamon

Equipment

  • 9-inch pie plate
  • Mixing spoons
  • Mixing bowl
  • Pastry brush
  1. Preheat oven to 425° F (218° C).
  2. Place the bottom crust in the pie plate. Pressing it into the bottom with your flour-covered fingertips.
  3. Mix the flour, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt in a bowl.
  4. Toss the apples in the sugar mixture.
  5. Place the apples in the bottom crust, mounding the apples in the center.
  6. Scatter the butter pieces on top of the apples.
  7. Place the top crust on the pie then seal and crimp the edges.
  8. Brush the top with of the pie with milk or cream and sprinkle with the cinnamon-sugar mixture.
  9. Make several slits in the top of the pie for steam to escape.
  10. Place the pie in the oven and bake for 10 minutes.
  11. Reduce heat to 350° F (176° C) and continue to bake an additional 50-60 minutes or until crust is browned and filling is bubbling. Insert a knife through one of the slits to make sure the apples are tender.
